22 Years Later, Gantz Creator Confirms Return With New Movie for Their Wildest Series

Over two decades after the Gantz anime finished airing, its creator is releasing a movie based on their most unconventional manga yet. If you watched anime in the 2000s, you likely remember Gantz – it was known for its mature themes and surprising character deaths. The creator has been working on various projects since then, and this new film is shaping up to be their most daring work so far.

Hiroya Oku’s new series, Gigant, has a unique premise: an adult film star gains the power to transform into a giant monster. K2 Pictures recently announced at the Cannes Film Festival that they will be adapting Gigant into their first animated feature film.

What to Know for New Gigant Movie

K2 Pictures has announced upcoming projects, including a new animated movie based on Gigant. While a release date hasn’t been set yet, this will be K2 Pictures’ first animated feature. The film promises a thrilling science fiction adventure in the style of previous works like Gantz and Inuyashiki, continuing Hiroya Oku’s unique mix of sci-fi and surreal themes. Gigant itself is described as an unexpectedly touching love story with a truly unique and dramatic plot.

The manga Gigant originally appeared in Shogakukan’s Big Comics Superior from 2017 to 2021. It centers around Chiho, an adult film star who gains the power to become a giant—often while disrobing—thanks to a strange device. She develops a connection with Rei, a teenager hoping to become a filmmaker. Meanwhile, a bizarre program begins fulfilling requests for increasingly outlandish events, like raining feces, natural disasters, and celebrity scandals. Ultimately, Chiho’s newfound giant size becomes crucial to saving the world.

What’s Even Going on With Gantz?

The original Gantz anime faced a lot of criticism when it first came out over 20 years ago. It was cancelled before the manga finished, and it actually told a completely different story. Despite this, the series saw success with two live-action movies in Japan and a fully computer-animated film in 2016. Since then, it hadn’t seen much new content except for a recent spinoff with new chapters written by the original author, Hiroya Oku. A Hollywood live-action adaptation was also planned at one point, but never came to fruition.

A live-action movie based on Gantz was announced in 2021, but the author, Oku, has said he had very little input after initially granting the rights. Since then, the project hasn’t progressed, and it seems unlikely to ever be made. Meanwhile, the Gigant adaptation appears to have a more promising future and a better chance of being released in theaters.
