Previously airing on TBS for six seasons after an initial 11-year stint with Fox, American Dad is set to return to its original network. However, when it does, there will be a significant shift in the series’ episodes. This long-running animated sitcom has seen its fair share of changes: it first premiered on Fox in 2005 before moving to TBS in 2014. Since departing from Fox, American Dad!, created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman, has consistently ranked high in streaming charts.
Fox has extended the run of American Dad! for four more seasons, following TBS’s decision not to produce it as an original series anymore. Now, the franchise is preparing to return to its initial home within the Animation Domination block. However, a significant change fans will observe from its TBS era (as reported by Variety) is that the characters won’t be able to use profane language as frequently or freely as they did on their previous network.
American Dad Won’t Curse as Much Anymore
At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Matt Weitzman, executive producer of American Dad, shared that we’ll have to get accustomed to avoiding certain expressions like “shit” and “God damn it.” However, he emphasized that finding new ways to entertain isn’t a challenge. Though they must adjust the series for broadcast television, Weitzman expressed his joy that the team can continue creating new episodes. In essence, he’s thrilled to announce another 56 episodes of American Dad.
We’re thrilled beyond words to produce additional episodes,” Weitzman went on. “For eight years, we graced Fox screens and then TBS for another decade. The joy I felt when I learned we’d be returning to Fox for four more years was indescribable. I had hoped we might find a new home briefly, but the prospect of coming back to Fox is incredibly exciting. And let me tell you, our series has some fantastic plans in store for its return.
American Dad Returns to Fox in 2026
American Dad! is set to return on Fox with fresh episodes sometime in 2026, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. In the upcoming season, you can expect some exciting new guest stars, including Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson, Joe Mantegna, Chris Pine, Ming Na Wen, RuPaul, Wayne Newton, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, Jonathan Frakes and Kyle Maclachlan. Additionally, American Dad will be reaching a significant milestone by airing its 400th episode on Fox.
In simple terms, during a panel discussion, it was hinted that the 400th episode of “American Dad” will feature Stan coming close to death on his 400th mission. This revelation leads him to discover that he has been replaced by a clone. Given the quality of the series’ previous celebratory episodes for its 200th and 300th milestones, this special is expected to be quite entertaining. If you want to watch earlier episodes, you can catch up with “American Dad” on Hulu right now.
