7 X-Men Characters Who Always Get Experimented On

The X-Men stand out as a unique superhero team. While they battle villains and often use familiar sci-fi elements, their experiences are shaped by being mutants – essentially, the next step in human evolution. In the Marvel Universe, scientists have long studied these ‘Homo Superior,’ fascinated by their genetic makeup. This has unfortunately led to mutants being subjected to all kinds of research, ranging from ethical studies to cruel experimentation, sometimes willingly participating and other times forced against their will.

The X-Men are known for being incredibly powerful mutants with unique abilities, which has unfortunately made them frequent targets for experimentation. For some characters, these experiments have completely shaped their lives, even being the reason for their existence. Here are seven X-Men whose lives were forever altered by scientific experimentation.

7) Apocalypse

Apocalypse is a major villain in the X-Men universe, and has been conducting experiments on mutants – including himself – for centuries. He discovered an ancient Celestial spacecraft and became convinced that only the strongest should survive, a belief he shared with the Celestials. Using the ship’s technology, he sought to create a world ruled by the powerful, but first, he used it to enhance his own abilities, pushing his powers to their absolute limits. He’s also collaborated with other villainous scientists like Mister Sinister, always striving to become even more powerful.

6) Beast

Beast is now seen as an outsider among the X-Men, but he used to be a leading expert in evolutionary biology. His appearance has changed dramatically; he wasn’t always furry. That look is the result of years of experimenting on his own genes, using himself as a test subject for mutant research. He’s risked his life for others – nearly sacrificing himself to stop the Legacy Virus – and even teamed up with an earlier version of himself to overcome a dangerous side effect of his own mutations. He has an incredibly deep understanding of his own DNA.

5) Fantomex

Fantomex is a mutant whose life began with genetic experimentation. He was created by Weapon Plus in a massive, time-bending laboratory called the World, designed to turn mutants into living weapons. They physically and mentally enhanced him, constantly improving his abilities. However, Fantomex, also known as Charlie Cluster-7, managed to escape. He created a new identity and has since worked alongside teams like the X-Men and X-Force. In a bizarre turn of events, he even allowed Charles Xavier to inhabit his body to revive himself, which could be considered another form of experimentation.

4) Mister Sinister

Mister Sinister is one of the most dangerous mutant scientists in the Marvel Universe, obsessed with using genetics to achieve ultimate power. For years, people thought he was Nathaniel Essex, a scientist from the Victorian era, but it was discovered he’s actually a clone created to harness the potential of mutant genetics and become a Dominion. Though not a mutant by birth, Sinister developed a range of mutant abilities through self-experimentation. He mastered the creation of chimeras – mutants with combined genetic traits and multiple powers – by first testing these procedures on himself, and he readily modifies his own body with enhancements to become even stronger.

3) Laura Kinney

Laura Kinney, like her father Wolverine, is a mutant created through scientific experimentation. After Wolverine escaped Weapon X and its adamantium bonding process, the scientists weren’t ready to give up on his genetic potential. They used his DNA, along with that of Sarah Kinney, to clone him, resulting in Laura. She was genetically enhanced in every way possible, differing from her father only in that she received adamantium claws instead of an adamantium skeleton – a difference that would later be rectified during the Krakoa Era. These experiments made her an incredibly skilled fighter, eventually leading her to take on the mantle of Wolverine alongside her father.

2) Deadpool

Wade Wilson was a highly trained mercenary and black ops soldier who discovered he had cancer. Desperate for a cure, he joined Department H, a Canadian organization connected to the Weapon Plus program, and received an enhanced version of Wolverine’s healing ability. This, along with other improvements, made him virtually unkillable. Unfortunately, his immortality has made him a target for those wanting to experiment on him, leading to years of unwanted and forced experimentation.

1) Wolverine

Wolverine is renowned for his skills, but unfortunately, those skills often lead to him being a test subject. His incredible healing ability has made him a prime target for researchers interested in creating living weapons, and the Weapon X program transformed him into a deadly fighter. But the experiments didn’t stop there. Throughout his life, both well-intentioned and malicious scientists have used him for research, and he’s been subjected to countless tests. He’s the ideal subject for study, and it’s likely future stories will continue to explore this aspect of his life.
