Darling, gather ’round, for the financial world is aflutter with the most delectable tidbit! Our dear old Bill Gates, the tech titan with a penchant for philanthropy, has decided to part ways with a rather staggering sum of his cherished Microsoft (MSFT) shares. Oh, the drama! And as if that weren’t enough, he’s also trimmed his sails on Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B). How utterly daring!
According to the ever-so-revealing 13F filing of the Gates Foundation Trust, our Bill has offloaded a cool 1,500,000 MSFT shares, valued at a mere $1.04 billion, in the final quarter of 2025. My, my, what a way to end the year! This little maneuver reduced the foundation’s Microsoft holdings from 9,191,207 shares to a modest 7,691,207, a 16% decline. Still, one mustn’t fret-as of December 31st, the trust’s MSFT ownership stands at a respectable $3.719 billion. Quite the cushion, wouldn’t you say?
But wait, there’s more! The foundation also bid adieu to $1.187 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares, shedding 2,358,460 BRK-B shares like last season’s fashion. By the end of Q4 2025, the trust still clings to 19,406,764 BRK-B shares, valued at a not-so-shabby $9.754 billion. One can only imagine the cocktail party chatter this has sparked!
Now, one might wonder if Bill has taken a leaf from the minimalist playbook, but fear not-the Gates Foundation Trust has kept its other holdings intact. No new acquisitions, no additional dalliances. How very disciplined, though one can’t help but wonder if boredom is setting in.
A peek into the foundation’s portfolio reveals that Berkshire Hathaway remains the belle of the ball, even after this grand divestment, accounting for 27.59% of its total holdings. Close on its heels is the rather unglamorous Waste Management (WM), with 17.98% of the portfolio. Other notables include the Canadian National Railway Company (CNR.TO), Microsoft, and Caterpillar (CAT), at 14.49%, 10.52%, and 10.29%, respectively. Such diversity! One can almost hear the clinking of champagne flutes in approval.
And there you have it, darlings-the Gates Foundation Trust, with its $35 billion in securities, continues to navigate the high seas of finance with a flair that only Bill Gates could muster. One can only speculate what his next move will be. Until then, let’s raise a glass to the man who knows how to make an exit as grand as his entrance!
