Supermassive Games, known for The Dark Pictures Anthology, has a habit of secretly including hints about their next game in their recent releases. Shortly after launching Directive 8020, players found a teaser for a future project, potentially called The Craven Man or Intercession. You can watch the teaser, shared by YouTuber Ben-Gun, below.
The preview opens with someone watching old VHS tapes, each with unsettling titles like ‘EVP 2’ and ‘Philip Experiment’. The tape currently playing is called ‘Don’t Play Alone’ – it’s unclear if this is the title of a movie within the story, or a direct warning to the viewer. When the tape starts, the screen shows warped and disturbing images, beginning with a shot of a deer, accompanied by a narrator describing four distinct phases of something unknown.
The haunting begins with simple knocking, then progresses to objects moving seemingly on their own. As things escalate, a destructive supernatural force makes its presence known, as if trying to get attention. The final stage involves direct communication, signaled by doors sliding open to reveal only darkness and a hand reaching out. The tape ends abruptly with a scream and a series of flashing warnings – “YOUARENOTSAFE”, “YOUCANTESCAPE”, “ITKNOWSYOU”, “ITHASSEENYOU”, and “TOBECONTINUED” – leaving the viewer unsettled and anticipating more.
Interestingly, the actual title of this new project hasn’t been made public. Within the game Directive 8020, it’s only labeled as a “teaser trailer.” It probably isn’t the same project as the rumored O Death, as that one is specifically listed as a separate video to view.
Back in 2022, trademarks revealed several titles for upcoming games from Supermassive Games, including the recently released Directive 8020, as well as The Craven Man, Winterfold, O Death, and Intercession. Given the unsettling imagery in the latest trailer, earlier theories about The Craven Man featuring a mysterious, Slendermanlike figure might be accurate. However, the trailer’s suggestion of demonic possession could also indicate that Intercession* is a more fitting description of the game’s theme.
Supermassive Games has consistently included sneak peeks of their upcoming games since releasing The Dark Pictures Anthology – Man of Medan. Each game in the series has teased the next – Man of Medan hinted at Little Hope, Little Hope at House of Ashes, and so on. Most recently, Directive 8020 was teased at the end of The Devil in Me.
Directive 8020 kicks off the second season of The Dark Pictures Anthology. We gave it an 8/10 in our review, praising its powerful themes and interesting characters. We did feel, however, that the game didn’t fully utilize its interrogation mechanics and featured too many stealth-focused sections.
