2026 began with a splash thanks to the global release of Cosmic Princess Kaguya, a visually impressive sci-fi anime film on Netflix. The film quickly became a sensation, reaching over a million views worldwide in just three days. Due to strong ticket sales, its limited one-week theatrical run in Japan was extended. Adding to the excitement, many famous manga artists, including Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man), showed their support by creating new artwork to promote the film. Currently, the theatrical release has only been in Japan, and there are no plans for a wider international release.
Following the film’s popularity, the official X account announced the Blu-ray DVD will be released on September 9, 2026. It will come in both a standard version and a special limited edition. The limited edition is more expensive, but includes extra features that fans will appreciate. Currently, the release is planned for Japan, though a worldwide release date may be announced later. In a separate post, the official account also mentioned they’re looking into improving production to meet high demand. Pre-orders for the Blu-ray opened after the announcement and were so popular that they’re considering increasing the number available to avoid inflated prices from resellers.
What Is The Story of Cosmic Princess Kaguya?

This beautiful film offers a fresh take on the classic Japanese story, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, but places it in a futuristic, science fiction setting. It’s also the first full-length movie directed by Shingo Yamashita, who is known for his work on the opening sequences of popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Chainsaw Man. The film tells the story of two girls who connect through music as they perform in Tsukuyomi, a virtual world where dreams and aspirations come alive.
Iroha Sakayori is a typical 17-year-old high school student in Tokyo. She’s busy balancing school with a part-time job, and finds relaxation by watching Yachiyo Runami, a well-known online streamer who manages a virtual world called Tsukuyomi. Everything changes for Iroha when she discovers a strangely glowing telephone pole – and a cute baby appears from it!
Unable to leave the infant alone, she brought the baby home and watched her quickly grow into a girl her own age. Iroha never imagined this girl was actually Princess Kaguya, who had become rather spoiled. The two girls bonded over music, completely unaware that dangerous forces were gathering, intent on returning the princess to the moon.
