Why Eddie Murphy is Against His Kids Acting Until They Turn 18

Bella Murphy had dreams of coming to set. 

The 24-year-old shared that her father, Eddie Murphy, doesn’t let his kids pursue careers in entertainment until they’re grown. He and his daughter starred together in the 2021 movie Coming 2 America.

She recounted always begging her dad to let her be an extra in his movies, but he always refused. As she explained in an interview with People on May 16th, her father had a family rule preventing anyone from working in the industry until they turned 18. He wanted her to have a normal childhood, and she’s grateful he did.

Even though her father discouraged her, Bella’s desire to act only grew stronger. She explained, “It actually made me want it even more.”

Growing up, visiting her father on the set of his shows made the Roommates actress realize he had an amazing career. She also thanked her older sister, Bria Murphy, 36, for inspiring her and helping her become a performer.

Bella explained that her sister had dreamed of being an actress first, and Bella initially looked up to her, trying to follow in her footsteps. Eventually, it turned out to be something Bella wanted for herself too, which she thought was great.

Eddie Murphy is a father of ten children. His children include Eric, 36, and Bria, Bella, Myles, 33, Shayne, 31, and Zola, 26, with Nicole Mitchell; Christian, 35, with Tamara Hood; Angel Iris, 19, with Melanie Brown; and Izzy, 10, and Max, 7, with his wife, Paige Butcher.

I’ve been so excited to see Bella step into this new world, and she’s been really open about what it’s been like. She recently shared that the biggest thing she’s learning is to trust her own instincts. Eddie Murphy has a large family! He shares son Eric with Paulette McNeely, and has five children – Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola, and Bella – with his former wife, Nicole Murphy. He also has Christian with Tamara Hood, Angel with Mel B, and Izzy and Max with his current wife, Paige Butcher.

Despite the wide age range of his kids – nearly 30 years separates his oldest and youngest – Eddie says his parenting approach has remained consistent. In a July 2024 interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, he described himself as a laid-back dad who is supportive and present, attending school plays and other events, but still sets boundaries.

However, Eddie admitted he’s more lenient with his youngest children, allowing them more freedom to be playful and energetic.

Eric Murphy, born in July 1989, is Eddie Murphy’s oldest son from his relationship with Paulette McNeely. Unlike his father, who is famous in front of the camera, Eric prefers to work behind the scenes, doing voiceover work for projects like Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate, Megamind Rules!, and even some of his dad’s movies.

In a July 2024 Instagram post, Eric shared how he recently used his similar voice to help his father, doing ADR (re-recording dialogue in a studio) for the new Beverly Hills Cop film. He described it as a “fun and incredible experience.”

Eric also found love with a little help from his dad. He married Jasmin Lawrence, the daughter of Martin Lawrence, in May 2025, with both fathers’ blessing. Eddie Murphy told CBS Sunday Mornings that he and Martin thought it was “cool” and joked about how funny their future grandchild would be.

The couple shared in February 2026 that they were expecting a baby. Two months later, Eddie announced the birth of their daughter, Ari Skye.

Nicole Murphy (born Nicole Mitchell) and Eddie Murphy met at an after-party for the NAACP Image Awards and married in 1993. They had five children together: Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola, and Bella. Although they divorced in 2005 after 12 years of marriage, they remained friendly.

In a July 2024 interview with HYPE+, Nicole shared, “My kids adore their dad, and I’ll always have love for Eddie. We’re cool, we’re good, we’re friends.” She has chosen to keep the Murphy surname, explaining she earned it during their years together and wants to maintain that connection for her children. She added that changing a name is a process and saw no harm in keeping it.

Nicole, who appeared on VH1’s Hollywood Exes from 2012 to 2014, has also been linked to other well-known figures. She was previously engaged to Michael Strahan, but they ended their relationship in 2014 after seven years.

Bria, Eddie Murphy’s oldest daughter with Nicole, was born in November 1989, just a few months after her brother Eric. Like her father, she’s passionate about acting and even appeared in his 2024 film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, with a cameo role. The movie was a family project, as Bria’s husband, Michael Xavier, also had a part.

Bria admitted she was initially nervous about working with her dad, worried about accidentally hurting him during a scene. However, she enjoyed the experience and felt honored to be part of such a significant film. She also appeared in his 2003 movie, Daddy Day Care, and has credits in The Perfect Match, The Game, and Conflict of Interest. Bria is also a painter.

In November 2025, Bria and Michael announced they were expecting their first child.

Eddie Murphy had another son, Christian, with Tamara Hood in November 1990, between the births of his children Bria and Myles with Nicole. While Christian generally stays out of the spotlight, he occasionally shares glimpses of his life on Instagram, posting pictures with his siblings at holidays and with his father at events. He once called his family the “Best looking family in #america” in a post accompanying a photo from the premiere of Eddie’s 2016 film, Mr. Church.

I’ve always been fascinated by Eddie Murphy’s family, and his youngest son, Myles, is no exception. Born in November 1992, he’s kept a pretty low profile, though he’s occasionally appeared on red carpets with his dad at premieres like Mr. Church, The Nutty Professor, and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. What’s really lovely is getting little peeks into his life now through his wife, Carly Murphy! They got married in September 2023, and Carly shares adorable photos on Instagram of their daughters, Evie (born July 2019) and Zuri (coming in October 2024). It’s so sweet to see those moments with Eddie as a grandfather! If you watched season two of the reality show Claim to Fame in 2023, you probably remember Shayne. After she was eliminated, her father sent her a heartwarming message.

Oh my gosh, Zola! I still remember when she first appeared – Christmas Eve, 1999! Her mom, Nicole, says she’s the best Christmas gift ever, and honestly, I totally get it. I loved seeing her with her sisters, Bria, Shayne, and Bella on Hollywood Exes! She doesn’t walk as many red carpets with her family anymore, but thankfully she keeps us all updated on Instagram. Seriously, her feed is amazing – travel pics, fashion inspiration… I’m obsessed with everything she posts!

Like her sister Bria, Bella shares a love for acting and even appeared in her father’s 2021 film, Coming 2 America. But she didn’t get the role just because of her family name—she had to audition like everyone else.

“I really wanted to do a good job,” Bella explained in an interview with Good Morning America in February 2021. “I didn’t want people to think I was only cast because I’m his daughter and couldn’t keep up with the other actors.”

She certainly succeeded, making her father incredibly proud.

Eddie Murphy shared on the WTF With Marc Maron podcast how emotional it was to work with her. “As a parent, you’re proud of anything your child does,” he said. “But to see your daughter working alongside you, contributing to the film, doing fight scenes and karate—it was incredibly moving. I was filled with pride every day.”

Mel B (Melanie Brown) started dating Eddie Murphy in 2006. She remembers feeling a strong connection when they first met at a dinner party, so much so that she left because it felt overwhelming. However, she also described him as a kind, family-oriented, and respectful man, and they dated privately for a while before their relationship became public.

She had hoped they were on the same page about their future, especially after getting pregnant – something she believed Eddie wanted. But she was unexpectedly broken up with after she took a few days to consider their relationship.

The couple split by the end of 2006, and their daughter, Angel, was born in April 2007. Initially, Eddie questioned whether he was the father, but a DNA test confirmed he was. Despite the difficult end to their romance, Mel B has always held a special place in her heart for Eddie. In 2018, she admitted she still loved him, while acknowledging that he is now in a committed relationship with Paige Butcher.

Mel wrote to Angel on her 18th birthday in 2025, saying, “You’re such a special, bright, and talented person! I’m incredibly proud of the person you’ve become, but you’ll always be my baby. I hope you continue to pursue your dreams and always show kindness to others, just like you always have. Love you always.” Mel is now married to Rory McPhee.

Eddie and Paige made their relationship public four years before welcoming their daughter, Izzy, in May 2016. Eddie, who was on Saturday Night Live, later shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show how much he loves being a dad, saying his nine children bring him great joy and he’d happily have even more if Paige agreed.

She did! In November 2018, they welcomed their son, Max. Despite marrying in July 2024, Eddie and Paige prefer to keep their children’s lives private and don’t share photos of them on social media—mostly because neither of them uses Instagram.

Paige, an Australian model, previously tried Facebook and Twitter but ultimately decided to delete all her accounts in 2013. She explained to Vanity Fair that being in a relationship with a celebrity made her feel like too much of her life was already public. She wanted to protect her privacy and limit access to personal information, believing that anything shared could be used against them. She also admitted she found social media boring, mostly posting about her volunteer work.
