6 Former New Mutants Members Who Became A-List Stars

Marvel Comics pioneered the concept of introducing a new generation of mutant superheroes through The New Mutants. This is an approach that Marvel has consistently employed over the past two decades, also seen in series like Young Avengers, The Champions, Strange Academy, and Avengers Academy. However, it was The New Mutants that paved the way for this trend. The original team is particularly memorable, with members such as Cannonball, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Karma, and Danielle Moonstar later joining the X-Men. Over time, the team has undergone various changes, transforming into X-Force when Cable felt they needed a more aggressive approach, and then reuniting later with the original members serving as mentors.

First appearing in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 back in 1982, The New Mutants boast a rich history spanning over four decades. Several of their members have ascended to leading roles within Marvel Comics following their tenure with the team.

6) Strong Guy

It wasn’t immediately apparent that Strong Guy had a great potential when he debuted in New Mutants Vol. 1 #29. Born as Guido Carosella, this mutant can absorb kinetic energy by exerting his body when under attack, which boosts his musculature. However, he can only store this energy for 90 seconds before he starts to undergo physical distortions, making him more of a temporary weapon rather than a long-term asset. Additionally, he has a delicate heart that weakens further when he uses his powers. Interestingly, Strong Guy’s story surpassed anything in The New Mutants when he lost his soul and eventually assumed the role of the new King of Hell, taking over from Mephisto.

5) Domino

In the unique scenario of the New Mutants, it’s worth noting that the team member initially thought to be Domino was actually a fake. This deceiver went by the name Copycat, who assumed Domino’s identity when Cable invited her to join the New Mutants in issue #98. However, the genuine Domino eventually emerged after this, accepting a position on the team following its transformation into X-Force, marking her first appearance in X-Force #8. Despite Copycat maintaining a low profile as a villain, Domino has since risen to become a top-tier mutant and even made her cinematic debut in Deadpool 2.

4) Sunspot

In the early days of the New Mutants, Sunspot was one of the founding members. His wealthy father, being a member of the Hellfire Club, harbored a desire to get rid of him due to his mutation. This often made Sunspot impulsive, but he eventually formed a strong bond with Cannonball and together they became the core of the team in its initial phase.

Sunspot possessed immense power, which led him to join the Avengers at some point. However, upon his father’s demise, he inherited a vast fortune from Brazil. Instead of squandering it, Sunspot chose to use this wealth for noble purposes. He utilized the funds to establish his own team that mirrored the Avengers, acquiring AIM technology through purchasing its rights.

3) Magik

Initially, Magik manifested her powers during childhood, following her brother’s admission to the X-Men. Later, she reconnected with the X-Men and forged a strong bond with their youngest member, Kitty Pryde. As a six-year-old, she was abducted by the demon Belasco and sent to Limbo, where an unexplained period of time passed. Upon her return, Magik had aged significantly (though mere moments elapsed in reality). Joining the New Mutants alongside Kitty, she evolved into a formidable warrior. Her unique mutant ability allows her to create Stepping Discs for instantaneous teleportation, even across dimensions. Thanks to her experiences in Limbo, Magik also possesses potent magical abilities, making her one of the X-Men’s most powerful members as she matured into adulthood.

2) Cable

Cable is the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor, born under the belief that Jean Grey was deceased. Since Madelyne was a clone of Jean, Cable inherited many of her psychic abilities. As he developed a techno-virus, he was sent to live in the future. In his absence, he evolved into a formidable warrior. Upon returning to the present, he aimed to prevent a catastrophic future he had witnessed. He took charge of the New Mutants and transformed them into X-Force, to tackle more dangerous adversaries. Since then, Cable has become one of Marvel Comics’ most beloved and powerful characters.

1) Douglas Ramsey

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: In my initial encounters with Douglas Ramsey in the X-Men universe, he was less than impressive. He was your typical tech-savvy teenager with an unassuming mutant ability – the capacity to comprehend and converse in any language, be it human, extraterrestrial, or technological. However, his brash demeanor and eagerness to wear the hero’s cape left a sour taste for many readers.

But as time passed and Krakoa emerged, Douglas found his niche – he was the island’s sole communicator, bridging the gap between mutants and this sentient landmass. He even went against the Quiet Council to ensure Krakoa’s wellbeing, showcasing a level of dedication that had been previously overlooked.

Fast forward to the current events in the X-Men: Age of Revelation crossover series, and Douglas has taken on a far more sinister role. Following an upgrade of powers bestowed upon him by Apocalypse, he’s now positioned as the main antagonist, setting the stage for some thrilling confrontations in the upcoming episodes.
