It feels like history is repeating itself. Just as Phil Spencer did when he became Xbox CEO in 2014, the new CEO, Asha Sharma, is now asking fans for their ideas on how to improve the Xbox brand through a suggestions box.
I’m skipping Microsoft’s pointless promotional tasks – like mentioning Xbox – because honestly, it’s just silly.
It’s no surprise that the most popular suggestion right now is simply “EXCLUSIVES,” written in all capital letters. They could have even used exclamation points to really make it stand out.
Here’s the full suggestion, which has attracted almost 10,000 upvotes at the time of writing:
Xbox succeeded because of its unique games. To compete, a console needs compelling exclusives – games you can’t get anywhere else. Putting those key games on competitor’s consoles doesn’t make sense. Please focus on making exclusive games for Xbox again!
Finally, some exclamation points! I’m a fan!!!
That post has over a thousand comments, and I skimmed through them all so you wouldn’t have to. Honestly, it was a bit stressful – I might ask my team for extra pay for dealing with it!
I quote:
Stop plans to release Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Fable, and Gears of War E-Day on PlayStation 5. Also, don’t bring Forza Horizon 6 to PS5. Instead, make The Elder Scrolls 6 and all future games from Xbox Game Studios exclusive to Xbox consoles. Sony and Nintendo both have their own exclusive titles, and Xbox needs to do the same. Releasing popular franchises like Halo and Gears on PlayStation will likely drive customers towards buying a PS5 instead of an Xbox.
I considered correcting the punctuation, but I think it actually reads better as it is.
Microsoft has been carefully reconsidering its strategy of making games and content available only on its platforms, a practice its previous leaders once considered outdated.
Sharma and her team face a major challenge: over the last ten years, they’ve weakened their position in the market, making it nearly insignificant. This happened while simultaneously spending almost $100 billion on various content providers and offering their own games for free with a very cheap subscription service.
PlayStation 5 owners have been enthusiastically purchasing games like Forza Horizon 5 and Sea of Thieves, creating a difficult situation for Microsoft.
We’ll likely get a clearer picture of their plans for exclusive content later this year. However, I expect Microsoft’s financial team will ultimately make the decisions, rather than responding to feedback from fans.
