As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been blown away by Darth Vader. The original movies really cemented him as this truly frightening villain – equally dangerous using the Force and with that iconic lightsaber. But honestly, he’s gotten even more intimidating over the years. Nowadays, pretty much everything Star Wars shows him as this unstoppable force, where even the best Jedi Masters have a hard time getting a hit in. He’s just a monster!
Disney has removed several characters from the older Star Wars stories (known as Legends) who used to challenge Darth Vader, like his hidden apprentice, Starkiller. But in the current Star Wars storyline, Vader isn’t unbeatable. A handful of characters have actually defeated him, and some have demonstrated powers that would likely surpass even his own.
The Bendu Was Intrinsically Linked to the Force
The Bendu, inspired by a figure from ancient lore, first appeared in the Star Wars: Rebels episode “Steps Into Shadow.” This enigmatic creature had a powerful connection to the Force, and explained to Kanan Jarrus that he existed between the Light Side and the Dark Side – a neutral force.
The Bendu was a powerful being with incredible abilities – he could teleport, read thoughts, foresee the future, and even manipulate the weather. When the Galactic Empire attacked his home planet, Atollon, he unleashed a storm that destroyed two massive AT-AT walkers and several other ships. He could even target individual soldiers, like the death troopers, with precise lightning strikes. Despite his strength, the Bendu wasn’t unbeatable. Grand Admiral Thrawn’s forces ultimately defeated him by concentrating all their firepower, causing him to merge with the Force.
Emperor Palpatine Was the Galaxy’s Most Fearsome Sith Lord
During the original Star Wars trilogy, Darth Vader’s master, Emperor Palpatine, was the most powerful Force-user. It’s often hard to compare power levels in Star Wars because they change to fit the story, but George Lucas stated that Palpatine was stronger than Vader. In a 2005 Vanity Fair interview, Lucas explained that Anakin Skywalker originally had the potential to surpass his master, but after becoming Darth Vader and losing his limbs, he was about 20% weaker than Palpatine.
In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine demonstrated immense power by using Force lightning to destroy thousands of ships at once – a display even stronger than the Bendu’s storm. Darth Vader finally defeated Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, but it required a surprise attack, and Vader perished in the fight.
Luke Skywalker Was the Greatest Jedi of the New Republic Era
By the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker had achieved something rare: surviving a confrontation with both Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. Although Luke won his fight with Vader and Palpatine ultimately perished, Luke was still less powerful than both of them at that moment – Vader was holding back because of his connection to Luke. Ultimately, Luke survived and continued to train, eventually becoming a powerful Jedi Master.
According to Adam Christopher, who wrote the official Star Wars: Shadows of the Sith novel, Luke Skywalker was incredibly powerful after the events of Return of the Jedi – essentially the most powerful being in the galaxy. While the current official version of Luke isn’t quite as strong as he was in older stories, he still showed impressive control of the Force, like when he created a perfect illusion of himself across the galaxy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
The Mortis Gods Were Too Dangerous for the Star Wars Universe
As a huge Clone Wars fan, I was completely blown away by the episode “Overlords.” It introduced this incredible family of Force users – the Daughter, the Son, and the Father. They basically were the light, darkness, and balance of the Force. The Father explained that they were unbelievably powerful, able to control the Force in ways no one else could. That’s why he kept them trapped on this planet called Mortis – he was terrified they’d destroy everything if they were let loose!
The Mortis Gods were nearly invulnerable, able to withstand most attacks, even lightsabers. The only thing that could truly hurt them was a unique item called the Dagger of Mortis. Anakin briefly managed to defeat the two younger gods, but this was due to the power of Mortis enhancing his abilities, and the episode suggested it was only possible because he still held both the light and dark sides of the Force. Because Vader had fully given in to the dark side, he probably wouldn’t have been able to defeat them.
The Force Priestesses Were Star Wars’ Most Powerful Beings
The Clone Wars episode “Destiny” revealed beings even more powerful than the Mortis Gods: the Force Priestesses. These five immortal beings lived on the Wellspring of Life, the original home of midi-chlorians, and acted as the embodiment of the Force. In Star Wars history, they were the closest things to actual gods, determining what happened after death – even the Mortis Gods likely answered to them.
Though seen as incredibly powerful, the Force Priestesses in The Clone Wars weren’t shown fighting because they operated on a higher plane of existence than the Jedi or Sith. No physical threat, not even Darth Vader, could harm them. While future Star Wars shows like season two of Ahsoka might delve deeper into the universe’s origins, the Force Priestesses currently stand as the most powerful beings in established Star Wars lore.
