With the show already renewed through twelve seasons, rumors have circulated about potential expansions beyond television. A Rick & Morty movie is reportedly in the works after years of planning, according to The Insneider. Director Jacob Hair, who has directed some of the show’s most popular episodes – including “The Vat of Acid Episode,” “Rickmurai Jack,” “Night Family,” “Unmortricken,” and “Valkyrick” – is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct. Given the creators have long considered a movie and the show remains incredibly popular, a film seems like a natural next step for the franchise.
The History of The Rick & Morty Movie
There’s been talk of a Rick & Morty movie for a while, especially since co-creator Dan Harmon – also known for shows like Community and the upcoming One-Punch Man adaptation – has shared his vision for it. Harmon doesn’t want a movie that drastically alters the show’s universe; instead, he’d prefer something that feels like an extended episode. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained his hopes for a potential film focused on the Smith family.
The idea for the Rick and Morty movie, according to creator Dan Harmon, is to essentially create an extended, feature-length version of a typical episode – a ‘super badass’ 90-minute adventure, without trying to make it overly serious or dramatic. Interestingly, director Zack Snyder – known for films like Man of Steel and Batman V Superman – is a huge fan and offered to help. Harmon joked that he wants Snyder to create his signature visual style for the movie first, potentially leading to a six-hour version, with three hours of it being in black and white, released in multiple cuts.
