Stranger Things Creators Promise to Reveal Eleven’s Fate & Address 1 Major Ending Theory

Even months after the last episode aired on New Year’s Eve, some fans are still disappointed with the ending of Stranger Things. While the finale received a lot of hype – as most big series finales do – and took a long time to produce, many feel it didn’t quite deliver. The cliffhanger involving Eleven’s fate didn’t help, though it does leave the possibility of future seasons. Now, we have a better idea of how long we might have to wait to find out what happens next.

Before their new Netflix show, The Boroughs, is released this week, the Duffer brothers—who also executive produce Stranger Things—sat down with Josh Horowitz on his podcast, Happy, Sad, Confused, to finally discuss that controversial ending. When asked directly if Eleven survives, Ross Duffer jokingly compared the situation to David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, who continued to be asked about Tony Soprano’s fate for years. Horowitz then asked if Stranger Things fans should expect a similar wait for answers. Duffer responded that he hopes people are still talking about the show in 20 years, saying, “At that point, I’ll tell everyone everything.”

Is Eleven Still Alive After Stranger Things?

We might learn the truth about Eleven before too long, if Netflix decides to revisit one of its most popular shows. However, the creators always intended to leave things somewhat mysterious. As Ross Duffer explained to Netflix after the finale, the ambiguous ending was deliberate and part of the original plan.

The ending wasn’t originally planned to show Eleven with the group. The writers and we didn’t want to take away her powers, as she symbolizes both magic and the wonder of childhood. To allow the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to conclude and for our characters to grow up, Eleven needed to leave. We felt it would be more impactful if the characters continued to hold onto a hopeful ending, even without knowing for sure if it was real. This felt like a stronger way to finish the story and show their journey from childhood to adulthood.

Matt Duffer explained the difficult truth for Netflix and fans hoping for additional content or a concluding chapter: it simply wouldn’t work. He said that if Eleven is still alive, the best anyone could do is believe she is, as any contact would unravel the story. Maintaining that belief is the only way to keep her character viable, and it’s about Mike and the others learning to cope with the events that unfolded.

Millie Bobby Brown felt the ending was perfect, regardless of the outcome. She believes Kali’s powers have a larger meaning, and that everything happens for a reason. Importantly, she suggests Eleven’s survival isn’t the point – it’s that Eleven made a selfless decision. Brown connected with Eleven’s journey of finding her voice, noting that this season, Eleven made the most significant decision of her life. While this ending feels complete, the studio’s desires often lead to further story developments, despite what the audience might prefer.
