Actress Vanessa Kirby, known for portraying Sue Storm / Invisible Woman in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” has expressed her eagerness to take on a particularly villainous version of her character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Known as one of the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics, Sue’s darker aspects and abilities have been extensively delved into in other Marvel storylines.
Vanessa Kirby is interested in playing Malice after The Fantastic Four: First Steps
In various interviews, Kirby has expressed her desire to play the character Malice following her initial role. During an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, she was asked about which version of Sue she’d be keen to embody. To this, the actor enthusiastically replied, “Absolutely Malice! It’s my favorite aspect of her character, and it brings me so much joy.
Pondering on the incident that transformed Sue and her family into superheroes and their subsequent adventures, I recalled a cut scene featuring me and Paul Walter Hauser’s character, Harvey Elder, or Mole Man. In this scene, I apparently warned Harvey that I could give him an “aneurysm in a second.” Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige found this exchange useful for my acting, as it highlighted a genuine trait of Sue’s character.
As Kirby explains, Sue’s affection for Malice seems to stem from an innate desire within her to reveal this hidden aspect of herself, something that craves expression. Despite her dedication to selflessness, leadership, and positivity, Sue acknowledges she too has a darker side, much like everyone else.
Significantly, within the comic books, Malice represents a malignant variant of Sue. This malevolent form of Sue was awakened by the villain Psycho-Man during a particularly chaotic phase in her life.
During a chat with Variety, Kirby expressed her eagerness to bring Malice to life in the MCU, stating, “I can’t wait to play Malice.” She reminisced about her character’s sorrowful past and discussed the cut scene involving Hauser. Later, she shared, “Encountering the toughest aspects of oneself through Malice struck a deep chord with me. I’m really optimistic that I might get the chance to portray Malice someday.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently in theaters.
