2026 has been a huge year for animated movies so far. Pixar started strong with Hoppers, a new story about a teen who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver, earning $45.3 million in the US. Then, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out in April and quickly became the year’s biggest hit, grossing almost $967 million worldwide. On the streaming front, Netflix’s Swapped, an animated film from Skydance Animation starring Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, launched on May 1st and racked up tens of millions of views, surpassing records set by KPop Demon Hunters. And there’s still more to come! Pixar will release Toy Story 5, Illumination hopes to beat The Mario Galaxy Movie with Minions & Monsters, Laika is returning with the stop-motion film Wildwood, and Walt Disney Animation Studios will finish the year with the new fantasy Hexed.
Animation fans have plenty to look forward to! Sony has set a release date of June 18, 2027, for the final installment in the Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. DreamWorks will continue the momentum with Shrek 5 on June 30th, hoping to recapture the magic of the beloved franchise. Also slated for 2027 are Frozen III and a sequel to The Simpsons Movie, both expected to be huge hits. However, some highly anticipated animated sequels won’t arrive until 2029.
3) The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3

With worldwide earnings of $967 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the second-highest-grossing film based on a video game ever, only behind the first movie’s $1.36 billion. This success strongly suggests a third film is on the way. Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad, revealed during promotion for the second film that directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are aiming for a 2029 release. Although Nintendo and Illumination haven’t announced an official date, a three-year gap between films seems likely, mirroring the time between the first two installments.
2) KPop Demon Hunters 2

I was absolutely blown away when KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix in 2025 – it instantly became a huge phenomenon! The movie, an animated production from Sony Pictures, is about the girl group Huntr/X fighting demons who take the form of a rival boy band, and it was just incredible. The original K-pop songs were amazing, and the action sequences were so dynamic, it quickly became the most-watched film on Netflix, ever. I was thrilled when a sequel was officially announced in March 2026! Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans signed a deal with Netflix, and KPop Demon Hunters 2 is going to be their first project together. Kang has said the new movie will be even more ambitious, and with the complex animation style they used before, a 2029 release makes sense. I can’t wait!
1) Coco 2

Pixar’s Coco, released in 2017, was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, earning two Academy Awards and making over $800 million worldwide. It also became an important film for representing Latin American culture in mainstream animation. In March 2025, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a sequel, Coco 2, was officially being made, with the original directors, Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, returning to lead the project. Pixar plans to release Coco 2 on November 21, 2029, around the time of Día de los Muertos, just like the first film. Given the success of other Pixar sequels – like Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2, all of which earned over a billion dollars – the studio is confident in the film’s potential and is taking the time to ensure it’s made well.
