The theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the end of a significant chapter for the Star Wars franchise, one that began over five years ago. Starting with the first live-action Star Wars TV show and now returning to the big screen after a four-year absence, the adventures of “Mando” and “Baby Yoda” represent the most successful moments for Star Wars since The Force Awakens.
Like any show, The Mandalorian isn’t without its flaws, and fans have pointed out issues throughout its run, including with the recent movie. But what are the best episodes featuring Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu? With the movie now released, it’s a good time to revisit and rank all of The Mandalorian content Star Wars has created.
NOTE: That random Mando episode of The Book of Boba Fett doesn’t count. Sorry.
4. The Mandalorian Season 3
Most fans agree – and that’s unusual for Star Wars discussions – that Season 3 of The Mandalorian was the weakest so far. It moved away from the simple, classic Western feel of the first season and got bogged down in complex Star Wars backstory. The season focused on Din Djarin’s efforts to restore the Mines of Mandalore, hoping to reunite the scattered Mandalorians and reclaim their home planet.
Season 3 revisited many storylines from Season 1, but some viewers found it difficult to follow because it required a lot of prior knowledge. This included understanding the history of Mandalore and references to older animated Star Wars shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels. The season seemed to show that Star Wars fans are eager for fresh stories, rather than relying heavily on past events and characters.
3. The Mandalorian and Grogu
While The Mandalorian & Grogu is enjoyable, it feels a bit different from previous episodes of the series. Director Jon Favreau seems to have geared this film specifically towards younger viewers, making it lighter in tone. It’s a very straightforward Star Wars adventure – Din Djarin and Grogu are on a mission to defeat an evil Imperial leader and avoid trouble with criminals. It’s charming, entertaining, and family-friendly, but compared to the best installments of the series, it feels more simply ‘good’ than truly exceptional.
2. The Mandalorian Season 2

After becoming a huge hit, Season 2 of The Mandalorian expanded beyond the stories of its first season and dove deeper into the wider Star Wars universe, particularly the storylines developed by Dave Filoni in shows like Clone Wars and Rebels. Unlike Season 3, it balanced references to existing lore well, making it enjoyable for both new and longtime fans. The season included exciting appearances from popular characters like Bo-Katan Kryze and Ahsoka Tano, and a memorable cameo by Luke Skywalker. Despite all the crossovers and references, the season ultimately focused on the strong emotional connection between Din Djarin and Grogu, culminating in Din making a huge sacrifice – giving up his helmet – to save Grogu from the villainous Moff Gideon. Season 2 is still considered one of the best Star Wars shows on Disney+, but it’s hard to surpass…
1. The Mandalorian Season 1

Looking back at 2019, it’s amazing to see how groundbreaking The Mandalorian‘s first season was. Before the show, Mandalorian culture hadn’t really been featured in mainstream media, making the main character, Mando, a risky proposition, even for dedicated Star Wars fans. The reveal of Grogu at the end of the first episode was a huge surprise, but initially, he was simply known as “the child” and didn’t have much developed personality. He relied heavily on the nickname “Baby Yoda” to gain popularity, which proved very effective. The show’s neo-noir Western style was a bold move for the Star Wars universe, and the directors involved – including Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Taika Waititi, and Bryce Dallas Howard – weren’t as well-known or celebrated as they are today.
Beyond the creative talent, The Mandalorian Season 1 intentionally broke from the style of recent Star Wars films. Its focus on practical effects, puppets, and traditional filmmaking methods felt like a return to the playful spirit of George Lucas’s original trilogy – the kind of enjoyable nostalgia fans had been hoping for. As a landmark live-action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian became a symbol of the emerging “Streaming Wars” and gave Disney+ a significant boost in attracting both attention and subscribers right from the start.
In retrospect, it’s unlikely we’ll see another Star Wars project that feels so fresh while also honoring the franchise’s history. The recent run of eight episodes was remarkably well-made and stood on its own, without getting bogged down in complicated backstory. That moment was brief, but it’s remained incredibly popular – it’s lasting longer than many other shows (we’ll be discussing Andor in more detail on the ComicBook Forum!).
