Hideo Kojima is known for being friendly with celebrities, but his latest project – a short film made with generative AI and featuring director Nicolas Winding Refn – is receiving a lot of criticism.
Prada premiered a six-minute film at the Cannes Film Festival this week. The film is an advertisement for a New York City event that has a vintage science fiction theme.
Although the complete version isn’t online yet, a shorter clip is available below. It features Hideo Kojima and Nicolas Winding Refn crash-landing on a dangerous planet and was created as a test to explore what’s possible with generative AI.
Winding Refn made a rather unusual statement, explaining that he and Kojima feel like they’re connected – almost as if they’re the same person experiencing different lives and sharing similar interests. This feeling is what their collaborative short film aims to capture.
Excuse me while I wash the taste of vomit out of my mouth.
Predictably, people online have strongly criticized this experiment, with one ResetEra user harshly telling Kojima he belongs with other creators embracing artificial intelligence, comparing them to being in a ‘festering slop pit‘.
The director hasn’t said anything about the short film yet, but it’s likely he approved it before it was released.
Generative AI is here to stay, but it’s facing pushback because much of its training relies on copyrighted content.
It also uses a lot of energy and water, which is a real concern for the environment.
I don’t think Kojima was heavily involved in this, so I won’t be too critical. However, even if he was, it’s natural for artists to want to explore new technologies.
I don’t really like generative AI because I think art made with prompts lacks genuine purpose or meaning.
I believe we should all find better words than “slop” to express this feeling!
