Mindy Kaling didn’t exercise at all during her latest pregnancy – no running, and no walking either.
After doctors advised the former Office star to take it easy during her third pregnancy, she happily agreed. She and her husband privately welcomed their baby, Anne, in February 2024.
Mindy shared on the May 26th episode of the Giggly Squad podcast that she was on bed rest with her now 2-year-old. For the final six weeks of her pregnancy, she was mostly confined to bed, which she actually enjoyed. She was able to do all her work meetings from bed and jokingly claimed she had a medical condition to explain it.
It required a change in how I lived, even when meeting important figures like the head of content at Netflix.
During an interview with Kate Hudson and Brenda Song, the 46-year-old jokingly said she often has to join Zoom calls with Bela Bajaria while still in bed and wearing sweatpants, and that Ms. Bajaria is very understanding. She called it ‘the best’ situation.
Mindy, a mom to Katherine, 8, and Spencer, 5, told her co-hosts Paige DeSorbo and Hannah Berner that she’s been missing the days when she didn’t spend so much time in bed.
As she put it, “Bed rot would be my dream.”
The executive producer of Running Point generally keeps her children’s faces private, but she has occasionally shared what it’s like to raise them as a single mother.
Being a mom and connecting with her children is incredibly fulfilling,” she shared with WSJ. Magazine in February 2024. “I adore them – they’re hilarious! And as a single mom, I’m also focused on providing for our family as the main source of income.

She explained that having children is the most important thing to her. She also wants to set a good example for them and create work they’ll be proud of, which adds a welcome challenge to her life.
Katherine, Spencer, and Anne might be starting to follow in their mother’s footsteps, but it hasn’t been as thrilling as they’d imagined.
Mindy shared with TopMob News in April that her kids are fascinated by her work on set. They imagine it’s a really exciting place with tons of treats – and there are a lot of sweets! – but she says once they actually visit, they quickly get bored while watching filming.

In her book, Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes), Mindy Kaling describes the moment she realized she would be a single mother. It happened after she organized a Mundan—a Hindu ceremony where a baby’s head is shaved to remove negativity from a past life—for her daughter, Katherine “Kit” Kaling.
I realized with a wave of sadness that my daughter would never get to meet her grandmother, my closest confidante. It hit me hard that I was about to become a single mother, facing the challenges of raising her on my own, and the thought was truly frightening, which is why I was so upset.
As someone who deeply values heritage, I completely understand the actress’s feelings. She shared something really personal about how her upbringing, a blend of traditions she calls ‘Kind of Hindu,’ gives her a powerful sense of connection – not just to her family history, but to a wider community across the globe. It’s about sharing experiences and knowing you’re never truly alone, and that’s something she and her partner want to pass on to their daughter. For her, it’s less about strict religious practice and more about a feeling of belonging and shared identity. It’s beautiful, really – creating that inner connection and knowing you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

When Mindy found out she was pregnant, she initially believed she could handle raising her child, Kit, independently, just like her own mother had done. She explained that she’d thought, “If Mom managed it all without even a complaint, surely I can too.”
It suddenly occurred to the former Office star that she was on her own when it came to new motherhood – things like breastfeeding that seemed simple were actually quite challenging. Following a friend’s suggestion, she hired a baby nurse, and it turned out to be a fantastic decision.
Growing up without a mother was hard, but I was lucky to have Rose in my life. Rose always offered great advice, and I always valued what she had to say,” Mindy remembered. “I was dealing with some really intense fears, and Rose helped me manage them. She stepped in as a mother figure when I needed one, even though it wasn’t her responsibility.
Mindy loved having Rose in her life so much that she jokingly told the baby nurse she might have another child just so Rose could come live with them again.

The star of The Mindy Project is always upfront about her dating life, even when she’s not in a relationship.
Mindy says she only feels aware of being single when others mention it. She noticed that married moms sometimes pretend they wish they were single, seemingly to reassure her that being a single parent isn’t so bad.
Nonetheless, Mindy shared how dating is “complicated” for her.
She often feels incredibly free and fortunate. There are moments when she’s so thankful for her independence – being able to live life on her own terms – that it brings tears to her eyes.
The actress, who previously had a relationship with her The Office colleague B.J. Novak, has also shared that she sometimes wishes she had a husband. She listed moments like being alone at parties, needing help reaching things, hearing dads mentioned in children’s books, wanting to share dessert, witnessing her child’s achievements, and even just thinking about diamond rings as times when she feels that desire.

There are actually a lot of positives for the creator of Never Have I Ever about being single.
One of the biggest benefits for Mindy is not having to discuss parenting choices with anyone. She explains that it saves her a lot of time to be able to make decisions quickly, without needing another person’s input or approval. Whether those decisions are good or bad, she can just make them and continue with her day.
There are also some perks: she gets to choose her own partners and set her own pace, without any family drama. She always gets to drive, has both nightstands all to herself, and gets complete control of the TV – meaning she never has to watch anything she doesn’t enjoy.

Before her daughter Katherine was born, Mindy joked that she was excelling at being pregnant, saying she hadn’t been so productive since her school days.
She successfully lost weight by carefully following her doctor’s dietary advice. As she explained, she never imagined she’d enjoy kale – she joked that she’d ‘sooner die’ than eat it, but there she was, eating it and feeling a bit like a health food blogger.
Mindy was equally committed to staying hydrated, jokingly claiming she was ‘the most hydrated pregnant woman ever.’
The second and third trimesters of her pregnancy were generally smooth. However, she experienced a strange five-day period during the third trimester where she couldn’t urinate, but thankfully, the issue resolved on its own.
