The world of The Lord of the Rings is growing! New movies are in the works, beginning with The Hunt for Gollum, which is already being filmed. On television, Amazon Prime Video has invested heavily in The Rings of Power, a series that explores the early battles between the evil Sauron and those who oppose him, and how the forging of the Rings of Power changed Middle-earth forever.
Viewers have had varying reactions to The Rings of Power. Some appreciate the large budget and high production quality Amazon invested in the show, while others are disappointed by changes made to the original Tolkien stories, which differ from Peter Jackson’s films. Considering how expensive and ambitious the series is, many have questioned whether it can continue for the five seasons originally planned. We now have news about the show’s future.
The Rings of Power Season 4 Production Plans Revealed

Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut on Amazon Prime Video on November 11, 2026. According to a recent industry report, planning for Season 4 is already underway, with filming potentially starting in early 2027.
Based on how long the last three seasons took to make, we can expect season four to finish filming in 2027 and be released around 2028. Although that timeline isn’t hugely significant by itself, the current plans of Amazon and New Line Cinema strongly suggest a broader, more ambitious goal.
Rings of Power Will (Likely) Complete Its 5-Season Plan

As a huge fantasy fan, I remember when Amazon announced The Rings of Power – it was massive news! They committed to five full seasons, and the price tag was unbelievable. Apparently, they paid $250 million just to get the rights, and that didn’t even include making or advertising the show. Each season was expected to cost over $150 million – that’s like a big-budget movie! There were even huge penalties – we’re talking $20 million per season – if they didn’t actually make it. The whole thing was projected to cost a billion dollars, making it the most expensive TV show ever. Since it premiered, I’ve heard whispers about changes happening behind the scenes. Rumor has it Jeff Bezos is really pushing to keep the show going, but it sounds like they’re trying to save money on seasons two and three, scaling back the budgets a bit.
The second season of The Rings of Power was better received by critics and viewers alike, and managed to keep most of its audience engaged until the very end, even attracting new fans. This is a positive sign for the show’s future, as the story is now moving closer to well-known events from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which should be more appealing to longtime fans. Season 2 improved on its first season by moving away from slow-paced mysteries and focusing on developing characters like Gandalf and explaining how Sauron created and corrupted the rings. The upcoming third season will jump ahead in time to depict the war between the Elves and Sauron, and will reveal the plan to forge the One Ring – the ring Sauron intends to use to control all others.

Season 3 is shaping up to be a major event that will definitely attract Lord of the Rings fans. Given where the story is headed, it seems like a smart investment for Amazon to continue with Seasons 4 and 5. Fans of the films are eager to see this series reach the climactic point in the Second Age: the alliance of men and elves against Sauron, culminating in the epic battle at Mordor – the Siege of Barad-dûr. While that war could potentially be covered in Season 4 (with another time jump), it might be best for Amazon to fully realize their original plan and complete the story.
