X-Men ’97’s Long-Term Future Revealed by Marvel Before Season 2 Release

The popular animated series, X-Men ’97, is coming back to Disney+ this summer! After its debut in 2024, the first season ended with the X-Men scattered throughout time. A new trailer revealed season two will premiere on July 1st. Plus, the show’s executive producer recently announced exciting news: we can expect many more adventures with Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, and the rest of the team, and future seasons won’t have such a long wait between them.

X-Men ’97 fans have reason to celebrate! Executive producer Larry Houston announced that season four is officially happening, and the wait between seasons will be much shorter. While it took around two years to release season two after season one, future seasons will arrive annually. Houston told Entertainment Weekly that the team is already well ahead of schedule, having finished scripts and storyboards for season three and are now reviewing scripts for season four. This means they’re consistently developing new content and can deliver seasons every year.

X-Men ’97 Is Travelling Through Time

During a discussion about the release date for X-Men ’97, Houston also revealed some details about the upcoming second season. The first season ended with Cyclops and Jean Grey traveling to the future, and several other X-Men sent back in time. The recently released trailer shows both familiar and new faces returning for season two. Larry explained that Apocalypse will be a central villain, and his immortality makes him a constantly growing danger to the X-Men.

The story of Apocalypse in X-Men ’97 explores the origins of a remarkably powerful mutant. It shows how events, rather than inherent evil, shaped him into a villain. The current version of Apocalypse believes only the strong should survive and is constantly trying to eliminate the weak, and the series hints at a future where his vision comes to pass. Sadly, the original voice actor for Apocalypse, John Colicos, is no longer with us, so Ross Maquand, who voices Professor X, took on the role as well. The first season ended with Bastion’s defeat, leaving the X-Men shaken by their recent battles, and tragically, Gambit did not survive.
