A popular game originally released for Xbox 360 in 2009 is coming back on August 20th, after 17 years. It will first be available exclusively on Xbox Series X, but versions for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 will follow on October 29th. A PC version will launch on the same day as the Xbox Series X release. The game will not be released on Xbox One.
The sci-fi visual novel Steins;Gate first came out in 2009, created by developers 5pb and Nitroplus as a sequel to their 2008 game, Chaos;Head. Originally, it was only available on Xbox 360 for the first two years, before being released on other platforms. A remake of the game was launched in 2019, and now, seven years later, another remake is on the way. This new version, called Steins;Gate RE:BOOT, is also being presented as a fresh start for the series and will cost $60. The August 20th release date was previously announced for Japan, and now it’s confirmed for Western audiences as well. However, while Japan will get the game on all platforms simultaneously, the release schedule for other regions is yet to be fully detailed.
An Underrated Gem From Another Era
Despite being part of a smaller, lesser-known series, Steins;Gate is a high-quality game – it has an impressive score of 87 on Metacritic. It’s clearly popular with its dedicated fans, as shown by its ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating on Steam, earned from the approval of 95% of over 5,000 reviewers.
Honestly, I’m a little puzzled why this game is launching only on Xbox Series X, other than maybe it’s a tribute to the first game. Usually when Xbox gets timed exclusivity like this, it means the game will be on Game Pass, but so far, there’s been no announcement about the remake being available on Game Pass at launch. I’m hoping it happens, but we’ll have to wait and see!
The team at Mages, responsible for this remake, says it features updated graphics, a new user interface, and a refreshed story. How much the story changes remains to be seen, and that will likely be the biggest factor in how fans react to the new version.
