Maggie Gyllenhaal’s show has fallen from the number one spot on streaming platforms, surpassed by a very different type of program.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie The Bride!, featuring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, is now the second most-streamed film on HBO Max in the US. It’s been surpassed by Greenland 2: Migration, starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! and Its Box Office Journey — Explained
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut centers around Ida, a woman with a mysterious past linked to Mary Shelley. After being killed, Ida is brought back to life by Dr. Cornelia Euphronius, played by Annette Bening, and finds herself in a passionate and dangerous relationship with Frank, portrayed by Christian Bale, leading them both down a path of crime.
Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Zlakto Burić, and Penélope Cruz complete the main cast of The Bride!. Sarsgaard plays police detective Jake Wiles, Gyllenhaal is Hollywood star Ronnie Reed, Burić portrays crime lord Lupino, and Cruz plays Jake’s secretary, Myrna Malloy. The film also includes appearances by John Magaro, Matthew Maher, Jeannie Berlin, Louis Cancelmi, Julianne Hough, and musician Fever Ray.
Despite being made by leading industry professionals, the movie The Bride! wasn’t a commercial success. It only earned $24 million in theaters, while costing approximately $90 million to make.
When The Bride! was released, critics were quite divided. Currently, the film has a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 320 reviews from professional critics. Viewers seemed to enjoy it more, giving it a 70% score on the site, based on more than 1,000 ratings. While the film gained some attention through streaming, it’s still too early to say if it will become a beloved cult classic.
Why Greenland 2: Migration Is Taking Over the Streaming Charts on HBO Max
Ric Roman Waugh returned to direct Greenland 2: Migration, with a script by Chris Sparling, who also wrote the first Greenland, and Mitchell LaFortune. The film continues the story of the family from the original, bringing back the original cast and introducing their son, Nathan, now played by Roman Griffin Davis. It takes place five years after the events of the 2020 film.
In Greenland 2: Migration, John is working as a scout to help secure the bunker where his family is living, and his son Nathan wants to learn from him. Meanwhile, Allison has become a strong leader. But when a series of earthquakes and disasters hit, the Garrity family is forced to leave the safety of the bunker and face the dangers of the outside world once again.
When Greenland 2: Migration was released in January, it received a reaction similar to The Bride!, but for different reasons. Critics considered the film typical, and easily forgettable, but general audiences enjoyed it as a fun, big-budget action movie. However, despite this, Greenland 2: Migration only earned $44.8 million in theaters, while costing $90 million to make.
The Bride! and Greenland 2: Migration are both currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
