Long-Dead 2000s Disney Series Resurrected with Official New Reveal

Disney has become known for its popular animated movies and TV shows. While films like Frozen have been huge hits in cinemas, Disney Channel has also launched beloved series such as Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and The Owl House. Though sequels to Amphibia and The Owl House are planned as graphic novels, another fan favorite has unexpectedly returned – Super Robot Monkey Team, brought back by its original creator. Although a full revival hasn’t been announced, new content for the series is now available.

I remember watching Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! on Disney Channel – it had a pretty good run, actually! The show lasted four seasons with a total of fifty-two episodes, but it ended in 2006 after the “Jetix” programming block went off the air. Recently, the series creator, Ciro Nieli, shared some old concept art of the main character, Chiro, online. It’s really cool to see what he looked like in the early stages of development. He even posted it himself, so you can check it out and get a glimpse of the original ideas behind the hero.

The Monkey Team Returns & Revival Plans

Nieli shared some original artwork for RobotMonkey, which the animator discovered while cleaning his house. He explained that the show was created very quickly, and Disney decided to produce it with a small team based in Japan. Nieli, along with a director and character designer, lived in a hotel in Shinjuku while the animation team got started. A lot of the initial artwork remains in Tokyo and is likely gone forever. He posted a page of early sketches of Chiro and the monkeys, saying it wasn’t his best work, but it had a good energy, and promised to share more as he found it.

Back in 2014, Ciro talked about potentially reviving this unusual group of superheroes. A finale was planned, but despite the interview happening over ten years ago, nothing official has been announced. Interestingly, similar to Dana Terrace and Matt Braly with The Owl House and Amphibia, Nieli stated he would at least publish his planned finale as a graphic novel if it couldn’t happen as a series.

The creator of Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go recently told AnimeSuperhero.com that a finale is planned, though they’re still figuring out how to make it happen. They envision it as either a single movie or a full season, depending on the scope. The story could pick up directly after the last episode, or jump ahead in time to a massive war between undead forces and the robot chimps – a huge battle where all sides team up against a powerful enemy. The creator has the whole thing mapped out and feels pressured by fans to reveal the ending, but prefers to actually make the finale and share it that way. If they can’t produce it before they pass away, they’ve considered creating a complete graphic novel, even knowing Disney, who now owns the rights, might take legal action. As another option, they could create a comic book and change the character names and appearances.

The Works of Ciro Nieli

If you’re unfamiliar with Ciro Nieli’s work, he’s been involved in several popular franchises, both before and after creating this monkey superhero team. He served as executive producer and showrunner for Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and directed episodes of Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans. He also contributed as a key animator to The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While Nieli doesn’t have any new animated projects announced right now, many fans hope he’ll have the opportunity to revive his classic Disney series in the future.
