Tom Holland Breaks Silence on Spider-Man Future After Brand New Day, And When He Might Leave the MCU

Tom Holland has played Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for ten years, appearing in six films – including three dedicated Spider-Man movies, two Avengers films, and Captain America: Civil War. He’s adding a seventh with this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but what happens after that is uncertain. While Brand New Day is meant to begin a new story for Peter Parker in the MCU, Holland hasn’t been officially confirmed for either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, and there are currently no plans for additional solo Spider-Man movies. As fans wonder about Spider-Man’s future, Holland has shared his own idea for how to give the character a great ending.

In an interview with Empire, Tom Holland discussed his potential future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Spider-Man: A New Day. He expressed a desire to help introduce the next generation of Spider-People, whether it’s Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, or someone else. He’s open to any role in setting up that next chapter and hopes to be able to mentor the new Spider-Person the way Robert Downey Jr. did for him, allowing him to gracefully exit the role.

It’s Time for the MCU to Move Away From Peter Parker

We’ve seen three actors play Spider-Man in live-action movies, and they’ve all been versions of Peter Parker. Each actor has made the role their own and remains popular with fans – especially after the team-up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, focusing solely on Peter Parker for over two decades (since Sam Raimi’s first film in 2002) might be restricting. The comics have featured many other characters as Spider-Man, a point wonderfully showcased in the Spider-Verse animated films. Tom Holland has expressed a willingness to see someone like Miles Morales or Gwen Stacy take on the role next.

It makes sense for Marvel Studios that Tom Holland is considering who might take over as Spider-Man. While he loves playing the role, his thinking about the future suggests he’s planning for life after Marvel. Acting is a creative profession, and while big franchises like Marvel offer benefits, they also demand a lot of time, potentially limiting other work. Holland has managed to do projects like Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey alongside his Marvel commitments, but he likely doesn’t want to play Spider-Man indefinitely. Even enjoyable roles can eventually feel repetitive for an actor.

While the recent story arc likely won’t set up the next major Spider-Man storyline, it could be what drives the plot of Spider-Man 5. It would be really exciting to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker take on a young apprentice. This would offer a fresh direction for the live-action movies, which long-running franchises need to stay interesting. It would also be a perfect way to conclude Peter’s story as someone inspired by Iron Man. Holland began his journey alongside Robert Downey Jr., so having Peter become a mentor himself would nicely complete that arc and pass the responsibility on to a new hero.

Most likely, we’ll see a new Spider-Man introduced after the current Multiverse Saga wraps up. While one of the original Spider-Man actors will probably appear in the next Avengers films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will then undergo a gentle reboot to simplify the storyline for the future. Some characters and plotlines will continue, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is expected to remain popular even after Secret Wars. That would be an ideal moment to introduce a new Spider-Man – whether it’s Miles Morales or another character – and position them as a leading hero alongside the newly introduced X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other teams.
