The hockey world is mourning the loss of a true legend.
Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup winner and former player for the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche, passed away on May 28th, according to the NHL Alumni Association. He was 60 years old.
The NHL asked for privacy for the Lemieux family in a social media post on May 28, saying they are going through a challenging time.
Claude is remembered with love by his wife, Deborah Lemieux, and their four children, including NHL player Brendan Lemieux, according to the NHL.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to a furniture showroom around 2:00 AM on May 28th after receiving a report of a suicide attempt. They shared this information with the New York Times in response to inquiries about the death of Claude.
TopMob News reached out to the NHL Alumni Association but has not yet heard back.
Claude was a popular figure in the NHL. Geoff Molson, a co-owner of the Canadiens—the team where Claude played for seven seasons and won his first Stanley Cup—shared his sadness upon hearing the news.
Today is a very sad day for the Canadiens organization and the entire hockey world. In a statement, he described Claude as a determined and fearless player who always performed well under pressure. He was a true leader who helped the team achieve great success, and he perfectly represented what it meant to be a Montreal Canadien.
Claude was known throughout his 21-year career as a highly skilled, and sometimes frustrating, opponent. But he was also a prolific scorer, finishing with 329 goals, and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1995.
Throughout his NHL career, he played for six different teams, finishing with the San Jose Sharks in 2009.

After retiring as a player, Claude became an NHL player agent, as reported by the New York Times.
Only a few days before he passed away, he had the honor of carrying the ceremonial torch into Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals on May 25th. In that game, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens with a score of 3-2.
Beyond his achievements in hockey, Claude’s son shared that his father was a constant source of support throughout his own hockey career.
Brendan shared with USA Today in 2014 that his dad is who he looks up to most, both as a hockey player and as a person. He admires his father’s career and the intensity with which he played, even the fact that many people disliked him. He simply loves his dad for being himself.
