CBS’ Monk Replacement Show Officially Casts Tony Shalhoub

Though Tony Shalhoub’s time playing detective Adrian Monk may be over, he’s still collaborating with the people who made the show a success. He’s joining a new series that feels like a continuation of Monk, and it’s bringing the original team back together.

Tony Shalhoub is set to star in the new CBS series Einstein. He will play Jack Einstein, the father of Lewis Einstein (played by Matthew Gray Gubler, known from Criminal Minds). Lewis is the great-grandson of Albert Einstein, making Shalhoub’s character his grandfather. This role also brings Shalhoub back together with collaborators from his show Monk – Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk – who are executive producers on Einstein.

Tony Shalhoub’s Next Role Is Albert Einstein’s Grandson

Albert Einstein’s brilliant but aimless great-grandson enjoys a secure life as a professor until his rebellious behavior gets him into legal trouble. He’s then unexpectedly recruited to assist a local detective with her most challenging investigations.

Michael Rauch, Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Laura Beetz are also executive producers on ‘Einstein,’ with Gubler handling production. The show stars Gubler alongside Fumero as a detective and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as their captain, Capt. Frost. Rosa Salazar was originally cast in the detective role but was later replaced by Fumero.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the premiere of Einstein. Originally, the show was scheduled to air during the 2025-26 TV season, but a busy schedule caused a delay. While many expected it to debut this fall, CBS hasn’t officially announced a premiere date. Now, reports indicate the show will now premiere midseason.

Tony Shalhoub Will Always Be Known for Playing Monk

I’ve been a huge fan of Tony Shalhoub for years, especially for his iconic role as Adrian Monk! He was absolutely brilliant, and it’s amazing how much recognition he got for it – three Primetime Emmys is incredible! I first watched Monk when it was on USA Network from 2002 to 2009, and I was so excited when Peacock brought the character back in 2023 with the movie M. Everyone loved it, and ever since, people have been hoping they’ll make another Monk story, but so far, there haven’t been any official announcements.

Tony Shalhoub is also well-known for his role as Abe Weissman on the Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which ran from 2017 to 2023, and earned him another Emmy Award. Beyond television, he’s appeared in many films, including Men in Black, Thirteen Ghosts, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. He also provides voice work for the Cars movies.

Einstein has not yet been given an official premiere date by CBS.
