Nicolas Cage Breaks Silence on Joining HBO’s Iconic Mystery Series

Nicolas Cage is one of Hollywood’s most adaptable actors. Throughout his four-decade career, the Oscar winner has starred in huge action movies like National Treasure and Con Air, given subtle performances in independent films such as Pig, hilariously played a version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and recently took on his first leading role in a TV series with Spider-Noir on Prime Video. In the Marvel show, Cage plays Ben Reilly, an older private investigator in 1930s New York who is haunted by his history as a masked superhero. And if that wasn’t enough, reports suggest he was also being considered to star in the fifth season of True Detective, a highly acclaimed anthology series. However, that deal hasn’t been finalized yet.

While promoting his film Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage addressed questions about a potential role in the new season of True Detective. He stated he isn’t currently cast, explaining that discussions are ongoing but nothing is finalized. Cage expressed his admiration for showrunner Issa López and his willingness to work with her. He also admitted he hasn’t watched the first season of True Detective, though he’s heard positive reviews.

Nicolas Cage Just Revealed Bad News for True Detective Fans

HBO is aiming to release the next season of True Detective in 2027, and Issa López, who received praise for Night Country, will return as showrunner. However, Nicolas Cage recently mentioned he hasn’t been contacted by the show’s team recently, hinting that the writing process isn’t finished. Because True Detective seasons usually require securing a lead actor well before filming begins, the delay in communication with the potential star could push back the start of production. If filming doesn’t begin in 2026, a 2027 release date seems improbable.

Nicolas Cage is currently a very busy actor with several projects in the works, which could make scheduling him for True Detective difficult. Lords of War, a sequel to his 2005 film Lord of War, is nearing completion, and the WWII thriller Fortitude is also set to be released soon. He’s also committed to voicing Spider-Noir in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, planned for 2027. These existing commitments, and any future projects Cage takes on, limit the time available for True Detective. Cage won’t be available forever, so HBO needs to act quickly to secure him before his schedule fills up completely.

True Detective Season 5 is currently targeting a 2027 premiere on HBO.
