Two of DC’s Most Powerful Characters Are Coming to the DCU Soon, James Gunn Confirms

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about where things are going with the new universe! We’ve already been introduced to a lot of cool characters, and with shows like Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface coming out this year, there’s even more to look forward to. Of course, it’s great to enjoy each movie and show as it comes, but I can’t help but wonder who they’ll bring in next. DC has so many iconic and powerful characters, and so many of them would be amazing to see in this shared universe. Luckily, James Gunn has hinted that we won’t have to wait too long to see some really big names show up!

So, I was scrolling through Threads and saw someone ask James Gunn about the future of a bunch of DC characters – Zod, Doomsday, Dr. Fate, Black Adam, Ultraman and his crew, even Darkseid! Gunn replied with a pretty cryptic message, saying ‘Two of them in not too long…’ which, of course, just leaves everyone wondering which two he meant. It’s killing me, honestly!

Which Powerful DC Characters Will Become Part of the DCU?

Given recent developments, it seems likely Darkseid will eventually appear in the DC Universe, though not as the primary villain some fans predicted. While the introduction of Salvation in Peacemaker Season 2 led many to believe Darkseid would be the main antagonist of the “Gods and Monsters” era, James Gunn has indicated that making him the big bad right now isn’t the plan. This is largely to avoid comparisons to Thanos from Marvel and Zack Snyder’s portrayal of the character in previous DC films. Instead, Darkseid will first appear in the animated Mister Miracle series, which is based on the highly praised comic book by Tom King and Mitch Gerads.

Figuring out the future of the second character is more complicated. Both Black Adam and Dr. Fate recently appeared in the movie Black Adam, which didn’t do well with critics or at the box office, and came out just before James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios. While that movie doesn’t necessarily rule out these characters from appearing in the new DCU, Gunn might want to wait before reintroducing them. Last summer, he said it would be at least two years before characters from the previous DC universe, like Flash and Aquaman, would be included. Every situation is unique, but if Gunn is taking a patient approach with Flash and Aquaman, he might do the same with Black Adam.

Ultraman is already established in the DC Universe, having appeared as a villain in the Superman movie. Though he was seemingly defeated – pulled into a black hole – his ultimate fate remains a mystery, leaving the door open for a potential return, possibly with his criminal organization. In the comics, Ultraman leads the Crime Syndicate of America, a team of evil counterparts to famous DC heroes from different universes. Seeing this group on screen would be exciting, but the timing might not be ideal. Since we haven’t yet met the main DCU heroes, it seems premature to introduce their evil versions so soon. However, it’s a possibility for the future.

We’ll have a better understanding of DC’s plans once DC Studios officially announces its future projects and their release dates. Currently, only a handful of movies and shows have confirmed dates. Knowing the full schedule will help us guess which of DC’s iconic characters will appear. It’s also unclear what DC means by “not too long” – it could realistically mean a couple of years, given how long it takes to develop and produce these projects.
