MAPPA has quickly become one of the leading animation studios, known for adapting popular series like the final season of Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Hell’s Paradise. While MAPPA has achieved great success with many projects, fans have been eagerly waiting for the return of one particular series. Fortunately, to mark a significant milestone, that series is now back!
The anime series Yuri on Ice debuted in 2016 as a completely original creation, not adapted from any existing manga or light novel. To celebrate its tenth anniversary this year, the studio MAPPA has released new artwork, with character designer Tadashi Hiramatsu returning to work on the project. A special “10th Anniversary Box Set,” including the complete series and soundtrack, will be available in Japan later this year. Additionally, a large exhibition revisiting the anime will be held this winter. For fans hoping for a new Yuri on Ice anime, this event could be the most promising sign yet.
The Controversy Surrounding Yuri On Ice
The movie Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence sparked a lot of debate when it was cancelled. Originally planned as a continuation of the popular first season, it was first announced in 2017 with a planned release in 2019. The release date was later moved to 2020, but ultimately, MAPPA cancelled the film entirely in 2024. While MAPPA didn’t publicly explain the cancellation, series producer Hideo Katsumata recently shared that the decision stemmed from creative differences, not financial problems.
I can’t share the specifics because they’re personal, but this issue is rooted in creative decisions, not business ones. Essentially, the project couldn’t be completed due to creative roadblocks. Because it was an original animated series, a situation developed among the creators and the studio, MAPPA, that made continuing production impossible.
Currently, it’s unclear if Yuri on Ice will continue. Despite a trailer being released for a film, fans aren’t sure if they’ll see more of the series. With many older anime getting revived lately, there’s hope that Yuri Katsuki’s story will return.
