DreamWorks is reportedly developing a sixth Shrek movie, but many fans believe another of their popular series is also deserving of a sequel. While DreamWorks has created several successful franchises like How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar, Shrek continues to be their biggest and most beloved success.
The original Shrek movie came out in 2001 and was a huge success with both critics and audiences. It received an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made over $484.9 million around the world. Notably, it was the first animated film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The 2004 sequel, Shrek 2, surpassed the original, earning over $929.1 million globally and becoming DreamWorks’ most successful animated movie. Shrek the Third (2007) continued the franchise’s success with worldwide earnings of $808.3 million, and Shrek: Forever After (2010) also performed strongly, grossing over $752.6 million internationally.
Shrek fans have been waiting a long time, but Shrek 5 is officially coming out in 2027. And there might be even more to look forward to! Dana Carvey, a former co-star of Mike Myers (the voice of Shrek) from Wayne’s World and Saturday Night Live, shared on his Fly on the Wall podcast that Myers told him they are planning to make two additional Shrek movies after the fifth installment (according to CBR).
Recent discussions indicate that a sixth Shrek movie is in the works. The other project Mike Myers mentioned could be Shrek 7, or a new film centered around Eddie Murphy’s Donkey character. Regardless, it looks like we’ll be getting more Shrek films beyond the fifth one. While a sixth Shrek movie is great news, the Puss in Boots series also deserves another installment, especially after the success of The Last Wish in 2022.
Puss In Boots 3 Could Build Off Of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’s Success
Puss in Boots quickly became a fan favorite after being introduced in Shrek 2, voiced by Antonio Banderas. This charming and talented swordsman appeared in several Shrek sequels before starring in his own movie. The film Puss in Boots (2011) was a major success, earning over $555 million globally and receiving positive reviews – it has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The popular character Puss in Boots returned to the big screen in 2022 with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. In this sequel, Puss is down to his last life and embarks on a quest to find a magical Last Wish that could save him. But he’s not the only one searching for it! The film was a critical success, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and also did very well financially, bringing in about $480.5 million worldwide.
The Last Wish was a fantastic follow-up to the original, giving Puss a moving and complete story. It also introduced some great new characters, including Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Perrito, Jack Horner, and even Death! Both critics and audiences loved the film, and it’s continued to find new fans on streaming services. A third Puss in Boots movie would probably be a box office success and could offer exciting new possibilities for the character.
Puss In Boots 3 Can Continue The Franchise After Shrek 6
Mike Myers may have been hinting at both Shrek 6 and a new movie focused on Donkey when he made his recent comments. Eddie Murphy told ScreenRant in 2025 that the Donkey spinoff is planned for release around 2028, suggesting Shrek 6 would likely come out after that. If they don’t make a Shrek 7, a third Puss in Boots movie could be a good way to keep the franchise going.
The Puss in Boots films exist within the same universe as the Shrek movies, sharing the same clever and funny approach to classic fairy tales. A third Puss in Boots movie could continue his adventures, potentially featuring other beloved characters from the Shrek world. The Last Wish demonstrated that Puss is a compelling lead character capable of carrying his own series, and given the success of the Puss in Boots films so far, another installment could easily be another win for the Shrek franchise.
