FX is developing a new TV show based on the popular comic book, That Texas Blood. The series is being called a modern Western with a dark, gritty style, similar to the works of authors Cormac McCarthy and filmmakers like John Carpenter – expect a lot of suspense and disturbing themes.
According to reports, the new FX show That Texas Blood is being created by Jim Mickle and E.L. Katz. They are both writing and executive producing the series, and Jim Mickle will also direct. Previously, the pair worked together on Hap and Leonard for Sundance TV and AMC, which became the network’s most popular original series. 20th Television is producing the show.
That Texas Blood Gets the TV Treatment
The comic series That Texas Blood centers around Sheriff Joe Bob Coates in Ambrose County, Texas. He begins to doubt his role in a world growing ever more violent when a man returns to town searching for his missing brother, uncovering a history of betrayal and bloodshed along the way.
Jim Mickle is most famous for creating the popular Netflix fantasy series Sweet Tooth, which received eight Emmy Awards. He’s currently developing another project for Legendary and Netflix, one he wrote himself. Meanwhile, Will Katz recently directed and wrote the horror film Azrael, starring Samara Weaving, for IFC and Shudder. He’s also worked on several TV shows, including Teacup for Peacock, The Haunting of Bly Manor for Netflix, and Channel Zero: The Dream Door for Syfy.
Michael Waldron and Adam Fasullo from Anomaly Pictures are also executive producers on FX’s That Texas Blood, alongside Adam Fishbach, Jeremy Platt, Linda Moran, and the comic book’s creator, Chris Condon, who developed the series with Jacob Phillips. Phillips will also be a co-executive producer.
That Texas Blood Could Make an Amazing TV Series
Originally a comic book series, That Texas Blood quickly became one of Image Comics’ most praised crime stories. It’s set in a made-up county in West Texas and follows an aging sheriff as he confronts harsh crimes and the declining morals of his community. The comic combines the styles of crime noir, Southern Gothic fiction, and modern Westerns. Image Comics has likened its atmosphere to the emotional impact of the film Paris, Texas combined with the intensity of No Country for Old Men.
The TV series follows the comic’s storylines. The first story arc revolves around a violent road incident and the death of a problematic local, which makes Sheriff Joe Bob doubt his skills. A significant flashback arc explores one of Joe Bob’s first cases, featuring a strange cult leader named Harlan Eversaul. Subsequent stories increasingly incorporate horror themes, notably the ‘Red Queen Killer’ arc, which centers on a serial murderer who strikes during a harsh winter storm.
That Texas Blood does not have a set release date at this time.
