One of the biggest reasons fans are excited for this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the movie debut of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. Bernthal has already won over audiences with his compelling portrayal of the character on television, including this year’s Punisher: One Last Kill, and now he’s bringing that intensity to the big screen. While details about the Punisher’s role are still scarce, the trailer suggests a lively and often conflicting relationship with Spider-Man. Despite their differences, Frank Castle clearly cares about Spider-Man’s well-being, even telling him, “You’re losing it, kid.” Brand New Day seems to be setting up an enjoyable team-up, and Tom Holland is optimistic about what’s to come.
I was so excited to hear about The Punisher showing up in the new film, and honestly, the dynamic between him and Spider-Man is one of my favorite parts! I’m a huge fan of Jon Bernthal, and getting to see them share the screen together was a real treat. It’s cool to learn that what made it into the movie wasn’t exactly what was planned originally – Destin Daniel Cretton really let them explore the relationship and create something amazing. I really hope we get to see Spider-Man and the Punisher team up again in the future – they’d make a fantastic duo!
Will Punisher and Spider-Man Become the MCU’s Dynamic Duo?

So far, each of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies has teamed him up with a different major Marvel character – Tony Stark, Nick Fury, and Doctor Strange. Introducing the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) as a regular partner in a future film would be a departure from that pattern, but many fans would likely enjoy it. Bernthal consistently delivers a strong performance as the Punisher, and with the next Spider-Man movie aiming for a more grounded, street-level focus – returning Spider-Man to his classic roots – the Punisher would be a fitting addition. If the film continues to portray Spider-Man as a local hero, there’s definitely room for Frank Castle to play a role.
It would be great to see Peter Parker develop deeper relationships with other heroes over time. While he had a meaningful connection with Tony Stark during the Infinity Saga, he didn’t really form close bonds with anyone else. This was partly due to the large ensemble nature of the team-up movies he was in, where Spider-Man was just one piece of a bigger puzzle. However, the solo Spider-Man films offer Marvel the chance to really explore Peter’s connections with other characters. If the scenes with Punisher, as Holland hints, are as good as they seem, it would be disappointing if Jon Bernthal only appeared once. It feels like this Spider-Man/Punisher pairing is just beginning to show its potential, and fans will likely want to see much more of their dynamic.
Exploring a friendship between Spider-Man and the Punisher, even a complicated one, would connect well with themes from the upcoming story arc. Tom Holland recently shared that the new film emphasizes the power of community, which is particularly relevant because Peter Parker is currently very isolated after the events of No Way Home. The story aims to show him relearning the importance of relationships. While marketing focuses on Ned and MJ, this theme could also extend to a connection with the Punisher. Maybe through their experiences, Peter could begin to trust Frank Castle, potentially setting up future storylines.
As a huge fan, I’m really wondering what Marvel has planned for Spider-Man after the Multiverse Saga wraps up. It sounds like Tom Holland is even thinking about who could take over as Spider-Man eventually – maybe Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen! If that happens, it’s possible they’d keep Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) on the bench a bit to focus on building that new dynamic with Peter Parker mentoring someone else. But honestly, it would be amazing to see Punisher trying to navigate a New York with two Spider-People! I really think Marvel could find a way to keep Peter and Frank’s partnership going while also setting up the next generation of heroes.
