The Star Wars galaxy has lost one of its most important leaders.
I’m absolutely heartbroken. Marcia Lucas, the incredible editor who made the original Star Wars what it is – and yes, George’s ex-wife – passed away on May 27th. TMZ reported it, and her family confirmed she died at home in Rancho Mirage, surrounded by people who loved her. She was 80 years old, and honestly, a total legend. I always knew that first Star Wars movie wouldn’t be the same without her vision, and now… it just feels like a huge loss for all of us fans.
Marcia’s family told the San Francisco Chronicle that she was a pioneer for women in the film industry and a highly influential editor, leaving a lasting impact on cinema.
Marcia and George first connected in 1967 while working together on a documentary, assisting the renowned editor Verna Fields. They started dating soon after and married in 1969.
Marcia started her career as an editor around this time, first working as an assistant on Francis Ford Coppola’s 1969 film, The Rain People. She then assisted with George Lucas‘s first full-length movie, THX 1138 (1971).
She first collaborated with George Lucas as the editor on American Graffiti (1973), earning her debut Oscar nomination for Best Editing. The next year, she began a fruitful partnership with Martin Scorsese, editing Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. She continued to work with Scorsese as the supervising film editor on Taxi Driver (1976) and New York, New York (1977).
Marcia’s work as an editor on the original Star Wars in 1977—Episode IV – A New Hope—was truly significant, and it would change things for both her and George Lucas.
After finishing the initial filming of the first Star Wars movie, George Lucas was unhappy with the early version. He then officially asked his then-wife, Marcia Lucas, to help with the editing, as detailed in the 2008 book The Secret History of Star Wars.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always felt that Carrie Fisher, as Leia, was the emotional center of the original films. Mark Hamill himself described her as someone who brought warmth and heart to the set, and he really valued being able to talk things over with her and share ideas. She was just that person for everyone, it seems.
Marcia, working with editors Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew, played a key role in the film’s creation and was later honored with an Academy Award for Best Film Editing.
After working on the original Star Wars film, Marcia Lucas edited The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, though her contribution wasn’t officially credited. She then returned as a credited editor for Return of the Jedi in 1983.
And she knew that her editing gave the films a certain appeal.
In a 2025 interview with Icons Unearthed, she explained that she believes movies are fundamentally about telling stories. However, she noted that George Lucas’s films were particularly known for their special effects.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen many partnerships blossom and fade, and Marcia and George’s story is a good example of that. They were a couple who not only shared their lives but also worked together, and in 1981, they lovingly welcomed their daughter, Amanda Lucas, into their family. Sadly, despite that strong foundation, their personal and professional lives diverged, leading to their divorce in 1983.
Marcia retired from her editing career the same year she married glass artist Tom Rodrigues. They later divorced in 1993, and together had a daughter named Amy Soper.
Ever since Marcia and George split, she’s always been so open about how tough things were for them, and honestly, I’ve been hanging on every word. It’s just… heartbreaking to hear, but I admire her for being so real about it all. I feel like I really get what happened, you know?
You know, as we get older, so many of us picture ourselves growing old together, maybe sitting on a park bench enjoying the quiet moments. That’s the dream, right? But life doesn’t always work out that way, and sadly, sometimes those plans just don’t come to fruition. It’s a bittersweet realization when you face that reality.
“I don’t think he’ s forgiven me for leaving,” she added. “I don’t think he ever will.”
