37 Years Later, Studio Ghibli’s Beloved Classic Gets an Official New Sequel

Studio Ghibli is incredibly popular, so fans are always excited about new films and re-releases of their favorites. The studio is known for its beautiful animation, compelling stories, and emotional depth. While founded in 1985, Ghibli didn’t become widely successful in Japan immediately. It gradually gained recognition, becoming prominent in the late 80s and early 90s, with My Neighbor Totoro (1988) helping to secure its financial future through merchandise. During its early years, Hayao Miyazaki directed Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), which has since become a beloved fantasy classic and is often shown in theaters. GKIDS began releasing Ghibli classics in IMAX format, starting with Princess Mononoke. This March, Kiki’s Delivery Service debuted in IMAX in North America and was a big success. Toho’s official YouTube channel recently released new footage of a 4K remastered version of the film to promote a limited-time screening in Japan. More information about the re-release and schedule can be found on the Ekigan website. The new video highlights the impressive improvement in quality compared to the standard streaming version.

What Is Kiki’s Delivery Service About?

I recently watched a beautiful fantasy film about a young witch named Kiki and her cat. It’s a coming-of-age story, really – a tradition where young witches set out on their own on a full moon to practice their magic. Kiki was excited to start this new chapter, and she ended up in a lovely town by the sea.

Moving to a new town and building a life on her own proved harder than she expected. Throughout the movie, she battles self-doubt and makes mistakes, but eventually learns to embrace what makes her unique.

Studio Ghibli Doesn’t Have a New Theatrical Film Planned For Now

Since the release of The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki has been developing a new film, but Studio Ghibli hasn’t revealed any information about it yet. They have, however, created a short promotional film for Ghibli Park, directed by Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita, which will begin showing at the park’s Ghibli Grand Warehouse on July 8th. Beyond this, no other anime releases have been confirmed for 2026. Fans in North America can still enjoy the annual Studio Ghibli Fest, running from July to October.

GKIDS will continue to partner with IMAX to bring more Studio Ghibli films to the big screen in IMAX format, following the successful re-release of Kiki’s Delivery Service. Atsushi Okui, a highly respected animator at Ghibli who has worked on classics like Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron as a cinematographer and director of photography, will oversee the creation of these IMAX versions.
