Nickelodeon has a long history of creating beloved kids’ shows, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a prime example. Since 2023, they’ve held the rights to the original 1987 series, but they’ve also made their own versions, including a CGI-animated series in 2012 and a recent two-season spinoff based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie. However, many fans agree that one TMNT series stands out as the best – and you don’t have much time left to watch its first season!
Starting June 1st, the first season of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will no longer be available on Netflix. This series, a fresh take on the classic characters created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, follows the turtles as they discover their mystical ninja abilities and work together to protect the world. Though the show ran for two seasons and 39 episodes, it was cancelled in 2020, which many fans were disappointed about.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Was Cancelled Too Soon (But Did Get a Movie)
Many fans loved Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a standout series within the TMNT universe. It reimagined the characters as young teenagers and gave them exciting new storylines, successfully balancing innovation with the core elements that made the franchise so popular. The show was a hit initially, quickly earning a second season renewal in 2018. Unfortunately, things changed during production of that second season; the number of episodes was cut from 26 to 13, and the series was ultimately cancelled in 2020.
Fans were understandably upset when Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was cancelled. The show had been gaining popularity and had exciting plans for the future, so its abrupt ending felt like a letdown. Many fans voiced their disappointment online. While the cancellation was disappointing, there was still some good news – Netflix released a follow-up movie two years later, in August 2022. The movie worked both as a continuation of the series and as a standalone story for new viewers. Now, as the series is set to leave Netflix, fans might feel that loss again. However, there’s still something to look forward to: a new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series was announced earlier this year on YouTube.
