The Best Racing Game Released Over a Decade Ago Today & Still Hasn’t Been Topped

Over ten years ago, a racing game was released that remains a high point for the genre. While newer games offer larger environments and more features, few have matched its perfect combination of being easy to pick up, offering serious competition, and simply being enjoyable. Truly great racing games stay fun even after years, and one Nintendo title proves that quality endures. It’s a game I often return to when I just want to unwind and have a good time.

Originally released on May 30, 2014, for the Wii U, Mario Kart 8 quickly became a standout game. It was later updated and re-released as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch, solidifying its place as the best version of an already fantastic racing game. With tons of tracks, a large selection of characters, and incredibly polished gameplay, it’s still considered one of the greatest racing games of all time. Even Mario Kart World hasn’t been able to top it, proving just how special and enduring Mario Kart 8 truly is.

Mario Kart 8 Is a Masterclass

When I first played Mario Kart 8, I was immediately impressed by how polished it felt. It was easy to pick up and play, but it also had a lot of hidden depth. Figuring out the best racing routes, perfecting drifting, and learning how to use items strategically kept the game interesting even after playing for a long time. It quickly became a favorite for my wife and me, and we both spent hundreds of hours playing. Surprisingly, even though I’m a more experienced gamer, she often beat me, which really shows how well-designed and fun the game is for everyone.

One of the biggest improvements in Mario Kart 8 was the addition of anti-gravity racing. This allowed players to drive on walls and ceilings without losing speed or getting disoriented. It significantly impacted track design, but still felt like a smooth and logical step forward for the series. Every Mario Kart game introduces a unique feature, and the anti-gravity mechanic in this installment is one of the most successful yet.

The course design in this game is possibly the best in the entire series. Tracks like Mount Wario, Sunshine Airport, and Electrodrome were visually stunning and offered a great balance of challenge and opportunities for creative racing. Even the classic, returning courses were updated with improved graphics and gameplay, making them feel both familiar and new. There are so many amazing tracks in Mario Kart 8 that I often just let the game pick one at random so I can experience a different course each time.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe Made a Great Game Even Better

Even though Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U was great, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch is the best version. It included all the extra content that had been released before, added even more characters, and finally gave the game a proper Battle Mode with its own dedicated arenas – something many players had asked for. My wife, who usually only liked the regular races, even had fun with Battle Mode because it offered a lot more variety.

The Booster Course Pass significantly expanded the game with waves of new tracks drawn from across the entire Mario Kart series. This created a game with an incredible amount of content, surpassing most of its competitors. Players could enjoy both beloved classic courses and fresh new designs, with always another cup to compete in and hidden shortcuts to find. It’s rare to see this much content in other racing games.

What’s truly remarkable is that even with so much added content, the game’s quality remained consistently high. You’d normally expect some drop in quality when a game is expanded so significantly, but that didn’t happen with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe. It’s not only one of the biggest racing games available, but also one of the best in terms of features and overall quality – this holds true for its tracks, characters, and items.

Even Mario Kart World Hasn’t Surpassed It

Typically, game sequels are better than the originals. However, many players still prefer Mario Kart 8 Deluxe even after the release of Mario Kart World. I personally always have it installed on my system, even if I haven’t played it recently. While Mario Kart World offers fresh concepts and expands on the series, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has benefited from years of improvements, balancing, and extra features. Everything in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe feels refined and complete, and each track fits perfectly into the overall experience.

It’s not that Mario Kart World is a bad game—actually, it’s quite good! However, Nintendo fell a little short with certain choices, like how you travel between races and the free roam mode. The concepts are great, but they need a bit of polishing. With a few updates and some time, Mario Kart World has the potential to become a must-have game, just like Mario Kart 8: Deluxe.

No matter how successful other racing games become, they still haven’t managed to beat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which really shows how incredible Nintendo’s 2014 game was. Even after twelve years, Mario Kart 8 is still considered one of the best racing games of all time. The Deluxe version only solidified its place as a classic, and it remains the top choice in a crowded field of excellent games, even with newer titles like Screamer and Forza Horizon 6 gaining popularity.
