Joss Whedon’s Firefly uniquely blended a futuristic sci-fi world with the feel of an old western, following the nine-person crew of the spaceship Serenity as they navigated life under a controlling government called the Alliance. Though innovative, the show was cancelled by Fox after only 11 of its 14 episodes aired due to low viewership. But thanks to strong DVD sales and a devoted fanbase, Universal funded a movie sequel, Serenity, released in 2005, which finally gave fans the ending they wanted. Now, as the franchise looks towards the future, this conclusive film could present challenges for new storylines.
Good news for fans of Firefly: an animated revival is in the works! Nathan Fillion announced earlier this year that the show is moving forward with animation handled by the award-winning studio ShadowMachine, known for their work on Pinocchio. Currently titled Firefly: Still Flying, the first episode, “Athenia,” has already been written by showrunners Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim. Excitingly, the original cast – including Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, and Morena Baccarin – are all returning to voice their characters. Everything suggests this revival will be a dream come true for fans. However, the series is planned to take place between the original show and the movie Serenity, which could potentially create plot holes or change established storylines.
Firefly‘s Canon Timeline Makes Fitting a New Series a Challenge

The story of Firefly and Serenity unfolds over about eight months. The original eleven episodes aired in 2002 cover some of that time, and a three-issue comic book series, Those Left Behind (co-written by Joss Whedon), was created to bridge the gap between the TV show and the movie. This comic explains why characters Inara Serra and Shepherd Book leave the crew before Serenity begins. If the new animated series wants to stay true to the established story, it will need to tell its story within this limited timeframe, while also showing these two characters leaving the ship.
It’s great that the comics Those Left Behind are officially part of the Firefly story, but the relationship between the show and its comics has always been a bit messy. When Boom! Studios took over the comics in 2018, they didn’t quite follow the storyline established by the previous publisher, Dark Horse. This means the new animated series is entering a world where what’s ‘official’ is already unclear – and that’s actually a good thing for the creators of Firefly: Still Flying. Because the comics already have some conflicting timelines, it’s less likely anyone will insist that a specific old comic series must be strictly followed for the new animated show. Ultimately, it’s probable that only the original live-action series and the movie will be considered the core story.

While not a perfect fix, a limited run of Firefly: Still Flying could work if it ended before the events of Serenity, essentially using the movie as its natural conclusion. However, doing so would likely prevent a second season from being made. Firefly’s popularity has grown over time, and because animated shows are generally cheaper to produce than live-action ones, a renewal of Firefly: Still Flying is quite possible. If the show continues, the best approach might be to change the story to ignore what happened in the movie.
The commonly stated eight-month gap between the TV show and the movie Serenity is an approximation based on production details, what fans have figured out, and the way the story unfolds in the original comics. Even fan-made timelines differ, with estimates ranging from just three months to six months between the final TV episode and the movie. The new series, Firefly: Still Flying, could potentially extend this timeline even further, allowing for more adventures with the crew. However, deliberately changing established dates risks making the story feel less solid and could make audiences less invested in future events. Despite this risk, expanding the timeline doesn’t invalidate Serenity; it simply gives Firefly: Still Flying more room to develop its own narrative, and in this case, that seems like a worthwhile exchange.
