Studio Ghibli is widely considered one of the most successful anime studios ever, largely due to the dedication of director Hayao Miyazaki and its talented animators. Fans in North America can now enjoy Ghibli’s films on HBO Max, which has become the exclusive streaming home for these beloved movies. Interestingly, viewers in Japan—where Studio Ghibli originated—don’t have the same access, and the studio recently explained the reason why.
Studio Ghibli’s president, Hiroyuki Fukuda, recently explained the studio’s stance on streaming its films. When asked about platforms like Hulu during a press conference, he revealed that Ghibli prefers to keep its movies on traditional television. He stated that continuing to broadcast them on Nippon Television’s ‘Friday Road Show’ is a priority, though they are open to discussing streaming options in the future. The reason for this preference is to maintain accessibility through broadcast television in Japan, where the films are currently not available on any streaming services.
Ghibli’s Streaming Future in Japan
In Japan, the streaming service Hulu is owned by Nippon Television, which explains why the president of Studio Ghibli was asked about his films being available on it. Keeping popular movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro on Nippon’s platform demonstrates a strong relationship between the two companies, though the exact reasons for this partnership haven’t been made public. It’s possible Ghibli is helping Nippon TV support traditional television broadcasting, which is facing challenges as more people switch to streaming.
Currently, Studio Ghibli hasn’t announced what their next animated film will be. In 2023, Hayao Miyazaki released The Boy and the Heron, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Although he originally said this would be his final movie, the 85-year-old director has changed his mind and returned to Ghibli to begin working on a new project.
Good news for Studio Ghibli fans! Even though there isn’t a new movie coming out in 2026, Studio Ghibli Fest is returning, bringing some of the studio’s most beloved films back to American theaters. The lineup includes classics like Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Tales From Earthsea, Only Yesterday, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away.
