It doesn’t look like a second season of Knuckles is going to happen. One of the show’s actors shared some discouraging news about the future of the Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off.
After the huge popularity of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the franchise continued with the streaming series Knuckles on Paramount+ in 2024. The six-episode show stars Idris Elba as Knuckles, a beloved character, and follows him as he trains a human named Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) while also fighting new villains and getting used to life on Earth.
In an interview with The Direct, showrunner Pally discussed the future of Knuckles, explaining that a second season wasn’t initially planned. Here’s what he had to say:
Because it was just a short-run show, a continuation probably wasn’t ever going to happen. However, the franchise is doing really well and has a lot of exciting things in the works.
When Knuckles first launched, it was presented as a one-time story. However, the show proved popular, and many fans hoped for more seasons. This is because studios are now frequently bringing back successful streaming shows, even if they weren’t originally intended to continue.
As a big fan of the Sonic movies, I was really excited when Knuckles dropped – it came out between the second and third films and acted as a perfect link between them. It was Knuckles’ first time really getting to shine and lead his own story, which was awesome. Paramount clearly saw it as a way to build out the Sonic universe even further, and it totally worked! It became one of Paramount+’s biggest hits, keeping everyone hyped for the next movie.
When it was released, Paramount promoted Knuckles as a significant addition to the Sonic movie world. The show quickly became one of Paramount+’s biggest hits, and was, for a time, the most-watched series ever released on the platform.
What started as one video game movie, Sonic, has become a hugely successful and popular family franchise in Hollywood. Despite initial doubts and a controversial character design, the first Sonic movie was a hit in 2020. The sequels have continued this success, adding fan favorites like Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow, and building out the Sonic universe.
The success of the Knuckles series proved that people were interested in the Sonic universe beyond the big screen. Despite some mixed reviews, fans enjoyed the show’s humor and the surprising friendship between Knuckles and Wade. Idris Elba’s strong portrayal of Knuckles was a standout, and Pally’s comedic timing kept the series lively.
Based on recent statements from Pally, it doesn’t seem like a second season of the Knuckles show will be announced soon. However, the Sonic franchise as a whole is still going strong. Even though Knuckles might not be getting another solo season right away, the Sonic universe is expected to keep growing, meaning we’ll definitely see more adventures with Sonic and his friends in the future.
Knuckles is available to stream on Paramount+.
