Game of Thrones Officially Reveals 36 Recast Stars for New Mad King Prequel

For fans of the world created in A Song of Ice and Fire, 2026 promises to be an exciting year. We recently enjoyed the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which received rave reviews. Soon, the highly anticipated third season of House of the Dragon – reportedly the most ambitious season yet – will arrive on HBO Max. Plus, details are starting to surface about another Game of Thrones prequel planned for release later this year.

The world of Game of Thrones is expanding beyond the screen and coming to the stage! Author George R.R. Martin announced a prequel play, Game of Thrones: The Mad King, on his blog. Set a few years before the events in the books, the play will run from July 20th to September 5th at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, with plans to potentially move to Broadway afterward. The full cast has now been announced, giving fans a first look at the actors who will be portraying beloved characters.

Who Can We Expect to See In The Mad King?

This play, based on the novels by George R.R. Martin and adapted by Duncan Macmillan, takes place during a tournament at Harrenhal. It focuses on crucial events and relationships involving characters like Ned Stark, his sister Lyanna, Jaime Lannister, and Robert Baratheon. For fans of the books or TV show, Lyanna Stark will be a familiar name. Though she only appears briefly on screen, the play delves deeply into her early romance with Prince Rhaegar Targaryen – the son of the Mad King – revealing the events that led to their elopement, the resulting war, and ultimately, the birth of Jon Snow.

Harmony Rose-Bremner will portray Lyanna Stark, alongside Noah Ritter as Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Michael Abubakar as Ned Stark, and Callum Woodhouse as Lord Robert Baratheon. Michael Shaeffer will play Aerys Targaryen, the Mad King, and Luke Brady will be Brandon Stark. Alexander Newland will play Ned and Lyanna’s father, Lord Rickard Stark, with Miles Barrow as their brother, Benjen Stark. Mariah Gale will take on the roles of both Queen Rhaella Targaryen and Lady Shella Whent, and Marcello Walton will play Ser Jonothor Darry and Lord Tywin Lannister.

The production has assembled a large and talented cast, including Maxim Ays as Jaime Lannister, Daisy Franks as Cersei Lannister, Edem-Ita Duke as Oberyn Martell, Elizabeth Ayodele as Princess Elia Martell, Hughie O’Donnell as Lord Varys, Kel Matsena as Ser Arthur Dayne, Daniel Hawksford as Ser Barristan Selmy, Richard Hansell as Grand Maester Pycelle, Marty Breen as Catelyn Stark, Tanisha Spring as Ashara Dayne, and Islam Bouakkaz as Howland Reed. Additional cast members are Adrian Christopher as Prince Lewyn Martell, Shaun Yusef McKee as Ser Gerold Hightower, Huw Parmenter as Ser Oswell Whent, Sebastian Charles as Owen Merryweather, Fred Davis as Qarlton Chelsted, and Tom Larkin as both Lord Whent and Wisdom Rossart. This extensive cast promises to deliver a compelling performance of this epic story.
