The town of ‘From’ has always felt like something out of a fairy tale. Ethan’s strong imagination and his insistence on following the ‘rules’ of storytelling have shaped how the Matthews family views and understands their surroundings. His beloved books and stories, which have recently returned to prominence, have been a crucial part of the show’s unique world from the start.

Interestingly, the very first scene with the Matthews family feels surprisingly similar to what From season 4 has evolved into. In the pilot episode, Julie shares a story with Ethan about Norman, a character he loves. The story depicts Norman being killed by a “monster” whose claws inflicted a fatal wound.

Ethan kept saying that fairies were coming from the Lake of Tears to help him feel better, but Julie gently explained that Norman had passed away and wouldn’t be coming back.

The storyline for Norman closely mirrors what happened to Jim in the season 3 finale of From. Meanwhile, the mysteries surrounding the Lake of Tears and the difficulty of accepting death have been central to season 4. As the Matthews family and other characters grapple with these issues, they often rely on the language and imagery from the storybook to make sense of it all.

Julie can travel through time, though she calls it “story-walking.” Ethan explained it as visiting different parts of a fixed story, emphasizing that once a story has happened, it can’t be changed.

From season 4 really focuses on the power of thought, showing how what characters think can actually affect what happens. This implies the story Julie told Ethan at the beginning wasn’t just a prediction of Jim’s future – it actually caused it to happen.

From’s Characters Have Control Over The Town’s Reality

Fans have long speculated that the townspeople of From somehow created the town itself. The Township seems to magically provide everything its residents need – food, shelter, and power – despite it not making logical sense. And Boyd, determined to build a real community, just happened to discover the talismans that allowed them to finally come out of hiding.

Season 4 strongly suggests this idea is true. In episode 3, Jade quickly found hallucinogenic mushrooms in the forest right after mentioning she wanted some. While the talismans and electricity might just be useful features of the town, the way Jade found the mushrooms – so quickly and specifically – seems like more than just a random event.

In episode 5, while the group was harvesting crops at the settlement, they were suddenly attacked by enormous, deadly dolls. This frightening event triggered a memory for Tabitha, showing that the town’s residents’ nightmares become real in the forest after they die. The show, From, demonstrates that the characters are responsible for both helping and hindering themselves, as their own minds create the challenges and solutions they face.

From Is A Story That Is Written By Its Characters As It Goes Along

In the world of From, the characters’ power to shape their environment is a major theme. Whether it’s Julie encouraging Ethan to focus on positive thoughts – reminding him that “all we have in this place is what we believe. So we have to believe good things” – or Fatima creating a Golem simply to feel safer and fight back, season 4 consistently highlights the importance of hope, belief, and maintaining a positive outlook.

The townspeople actually hold all the power in the Township, if they believe they do. While they’re part of a story that seems to repeat itself, they have the ability to change how it ends. Sophia has been quietly trying to crush their hope because she doesn’t want them to realize how much control they truly have.

Everyone in town has more influence than they think, and each person has a part to play in how the town’s story unfolds. This dynamic – where the townspeople are both characters in the story and, in a way, its authors – is what causes Sophia to respond to events rather than control them.

Just as Julie can’t alter a story once it’s happened, the Man in Yellow can’t stop the characters within a story from doing what they’re meant to do. That’s why he waited to harm Jim until after Jim had already assisted Tabitha and Jade with the Bottle Tree.

The Man in Yellow wants the town destroyed, but he can only encourage the residents to turn against each other – he can’t directly cause the destruction himself. Everyone in town has a part to play in the unfolding events, and while their ultimate fate is predetermined, how they act can change the outcome.

From Is A Reminder To Focus On The Present

The sixth episode of Season 4, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” really highlighted this. After Donna unexpectedly suffered a heart attack, Boyd focused intensely on positive thinking, which likely altered how the entire episode unfolded.

Donna was unconscious, and Kristi didn’t know if she’d ever regain consciousness. However, when Boyd was alone with her, he told her to wake up, and surprisingly, she did. Driven by a surge of adrenaline and determined to find answers, Boyd went to the basement of the Colony House. There, using a hammer, he broke through the wall and discovered the hidden door Jade had described during a hallucinatory experience.

When Boyd and Jade initially searched the basement, they didn’t find a door. Boyd was mostly focused on the possible dangers of Jade’s plan, thinking ahead. Similar to how Jade stumbled upon the mushrooms, the door doesn’t seem like something Boyd found, but rather something he subconsciously created when he decided to take action.

The show has made it clear that Julie can’t change what’s already happened, and worrying too much about what might happen will stop her from taking the steps today that could actually shape her future. As the theme song says, we can’t know what the future holds.

We – and the people of From’s town – only know what’s happening right now. What came before doesn’t matter as much as how things unfold from this point forward, because the current chapter could completely alter the story’s final outcome.
