A Beloved Nintendo 64 RPG Just Made An Unexpected Return After 26 Years

Lately, I’ve noticed a huge wave of classic console games making a return – whether it’s through full-on remakes, updated remasters, or even fan-made mods. It’s awesome! One console in particular, the Nintendo 64, really stands out to me. That thing wasn’t just a big step forward for 3D gaming, but it’s also where a lot of my favorite game series really became special to me. It’s great to see all that nostalgia coming back!

Nintendo is gradually making many beloved classic games available through its Nintendo Switch Online service. Subscribers can play these games on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 without paying extra – it’s all included with their subscription. Currently, the N64 role-playing game Paper Mario is available, but players need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to access it.

There’s a new way to play the Nintendo 64 game Paper Mario on computers! A fan-made port called Paper Mario ReCut lets you play the game on Windows without needing an emulator. While it’s not as simple as playing the game through Nintendo Switch Online, it’s a viable option for PC gamers.

Just to be clear, Nintendo isn’t involved in this project, and they probably wouldn’t approve of it. However, Paper Mario ReCut is designed to avoid legal issues often faced by fan-made games by not using any original game files.

To play Paper Mario ReCut, you first need a Paper Mario ROM file specifically for the US version. Paper Mario ReCut doesn’t contain the game itself; it’s a tool that rebuilds the game’s code so it can run on different devices. Because players supply their own ROM files, the developers aren’t sharing any copyrighted game content.

If you’re curious about how the game works beyond simply playing it, Paper Mario ReCut includes the “Paper Atlas Tool,” which lets you modify and experiment with the game’s files and graphics.

So, I’m working on Paper Mario ReCut, and it’s still pretty early in development. You can actually play through the whole game right now, but just be aware that a lot is still being tweaked and improved. I’ve put the download up on GitHub, but you’ll need to provide your own Paper Mario (US version) ROM file to get it working. I can’t and won’t share any links to ROMs, and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t post them in the comments either, just to stay on the legal side of things.

While it’s great to see these kinds of projects, most players will probably find it easier to play Paper Mario through the Nintendo Switch Online service or on the original Nintendo 64 console.
