Anime heroes, particularly in action-packed shonen series, often have traits that are truly admirable. They feel like genuine heroes – people we naturally want to respect and look up to. However, while most shonen heroes fit this description, some are quite different and don’t necessarily inspire the same level of admiration.
We all admire heroes like Izuku Midoriya and Tanjiro Kamado for their kindness and inspiring qualities. However, some anime heroes have personalities or abilities that would make a real-life encounter quite unpleasant – or even terrifying. Here are five shonen anime protagonists you’d probably want to avoid meeting in person, and why.
5) Light Yagami (Death Note)

Light Yagami is a truly frightening and arguably evil character, even for a shonen protagonist. He’s incredibly intelligent, but his extreme selfishness makes him untrustworthy. Like everything else, he’d likely manipulate you without you even realizing it, making it impossible to know his true intentions.
Once Light Yagami gets what he wants, he’ll discard you without a second thought, just like he did to others in the story. No matter how impressive he might seem, it’s definitely best to avoid him in real life.
4) Rudo (Gachiakuta)

Rudo, the main character in Gachiakuta, stands out as a truly unique shonen hero. Unlike most protagonists in this genre, his path is very different. It’s this unusual journey, and Rudo’s strong commitment to it, that makes him so captivating. Throughout the series, he consistently demonstrates a firm belief in justice, even going so far as to attack someone who was already captured and beaten.
Rudo has a harsh side and a strong sense of justice, but he doesn’t always think things through before acting. If you disagree with his beliefs, you’ll likely regret crossing him. However, this uncompromising nature is also what makes him a unique and compelling hero in the shonen genre.
3) Goku (Dragon Ball)

Goku from Dragon Ball seems like a really fun person to be around, but he’s just too strong to hang out with safely. He’s always looking for a fight, which isn’t a great quality in someone you’d want as a friend. He doesn’t fight to save the world, so much as he fights because he enjoys it and wants to get even stronger. This desire for strength often takes priority over everything else, even helping others.
Honestly, seeing Goku in person would be incredible, but also…intense! His transformations are just on another level, and imagine if he accidentally turned into a Great Ape – talk about a disaster! I think you’d really have to be someone who gets his energy and loves a good challenge to actually hang out with him. Otherwise, he’d probably wear you out pretty quickly – he’s just always pushing his limits!
2) Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki is usually friendly and easy to get along with, making him seem like a really fun person to be around – perhaps even more so than Goku. But he also has some incredibly frightening transformations. Most of his different forms look truly demonic, like something out of a nightmare.
Ichigo, like many heroes in action stories, has a powerful, unpredictable transformation that can be risky. When combined with the frightening appearance of his different forms, he can sometimes seem more like a monster than a savior.
1) Denji (Chainsaw Man)

Denji stands out as a shonen hero who breaks many of the usual molds. Though he’s often wild and impulsive, he feels surprisingly down-to-earth and relatable, facing problems many people can connect with. But the biggest reason you might not want to encounter him is his ability to transform – it’s arguably one of the most extreme and bizarre transformations in all of anime.
Seeing Denji transform would be truly terrifying – chainsaws erupting not just from his arms, but his head as well, making his power even more frightening than Ichigo’s. Plus, Denji isn’t exactly a traditional hero, so if you were ever in his way during a fight, you’d likely get caught in the crossfire. He’s definitely one of the most unpredictable and unique heroes in modern shonen, but also one of the scariest to imagine facing in a real battle.
