Everyone Should Watch This 1-Season Cult Sci-Fi That’s on Streaming (& Christopher Nolan Might Remake It)

If you’re a sci-fi fan, there’s a beloved classic TV show now on streaming that you absolutely shouldn’t miss. Streaming services are great for revisiting old favorites, and it’s exciting when new generations discover these shows for the first time. What makes this even more special is the possibility of this particular cult classic being revived by a highly acclaimed director.

I’m hearing buzz that Christopher Nolan might be tackling a remake of the incredibly unique sci-fi series, The Prisoner, and it’s got me thinking everyone should check out the original! Luckily, it’s easy to do – you can currently stream The Prisoner on both Prime Video and Fubo. Whether you’re a longtime fan wanting a rewatch or completely new to the show, now’s the perfect time to dive in.

The Prisoner Remains One of Classic TV’s Most Underrated Sci-Fi Shows

From 1967 to 1968, ITV broadcast a science fiction show called The Prisoner. Created by and starring Patrick McGoohan – famous for Danger Man – the series centers on a British intelligence agent who suddenly quits his job and intends to travel. But he’s kidnapped and finds himself in a strange place called the Village, a perfect replica of his home. Now called Number Six, he meets the other inhabitants – hundreds of people who live there peacefully, but are unable to leave.

This 17-episode series follows Number Six as he attempts to uncover the reasons for his imprisonment, identify his captors, and find a way back to normal life. Throughout the show, a central theme explores the tension between individual freedom (represented by Number Six) and the pressures of conformity (embodied by the Village). Ultimately, he doesn’t manage to escape, and the entire community faces danger unless he complies. It’s a groundbreaking dystopian science fiction drama that heavily influenced films of the 1970s, such as Soylent Green, Logan’s Run, and THX 1138.

The classic show The Prisoner has been considered for a remake several times. A miniseries version with Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen aired in 2009, and Ridley Scott discussed a movie adaptation in 2016. Director Christopher Nolan has long been interested in the project; he initially considered it in 2009 but put it aside. Following the success of Oppenheimer in 2024, Nolan revisited the idea, though he ultimately chose to film The Odyssey instead. Despite this, a remake of The Prisoner remains a recurring thought for him.
