Jeremy Clarkson was recently ill and spent time in the hospital after experiencing heart blockages. The new season of his farm documentary finds him recovering and under doctor’s orders to rest. He’s been told to avoid alcohol, red meat, and any strenuous activity while he gets better.
Jeremy Clarkson repeatedly finds himself in trouble – arguing over bonfires, helping with unusual veterinary tasks, and getting upset about financial policies affecting farmers. But that’s exactly what makes Clarkson’s Farm so engaging. The show thrives on his tendency to do the wrong thing, blending humorous mishaps with a real look at the challenges faced by British farmers. It quickly settles into its familiar pattern of funny failures and genuine concern for agriculture.
Jeremy Clarkson’s new gastropub, the Farmer’s Dog, is facing more than just high utility bills. It’s also been repeatedly targeted by thieves, vandals, and people who used to work there but are now unhappy.
While the show still has familiar elements, Clarkson seems to have become more mellow. A moment where he struggles to cut down a Christmas tree – and looks genuinely worried – hints at a growing awareness of his own limits. This leads to a new direction for the series, focusing on the future of farming. After visiting an agricultural machinery show, the program explores how farming can become more efficient and environmentally friendly over the next ten to twenty years.

The third episode of the series is particularly interesting. Jeremy and Kaleb, who have a charmingly mismatched partnership, travel to Europe where they meet a Dutch farmer who’s revolutionizing his potato farm. He’s using technology like drones and soil scanners to dramatically cut down on the costs of fertilizer and weed control.
In Rotterdam, the duo were amazed by a unique floating dairy farm. This farm uses solar power, feeds its cows leftover grass and bread collected from the city, and even creates drinking water for the cows from their own waste using a special desalination process.
Clarkson is back on his farm in Oxfordshire and, true to form, quickly buys something new. This time it’s a driverless tractor designed to plough fields with pinpoint accuracy, controlled by an app and a gaming controller. It makes for entertaining television, especially because Clarkson has a unique advantage: he can afford expensive new equipment knowing that the increased viewership—and therefore the payment from Amazon—for his show will likely cover the cost.

Beyond the main events, there’s the usual assortment of happenings, ranging from clearly staged to completely genuine. Storm Darragh causes disruption, and a group of travelers decides to hold a pony and trap race on Oxfordshire’s roads, using a local business’s parking lot as their starting point. Clarkson, playing the role of Britain’s quintessential grump, complains a lot, especially when his partner, Lisa Hogan, invests in snails (for skincare) and buys sheep he doesn’t approve of.
Things are pretty much the same as always, but with a softer side. Viewers of the old Top Gear might be surprised to see Jeremy Clarkson getting emotional about his pigs being taken away – but his farming show is still very popular and doing well.
Clarkson’s Farm season 5 returns to Prime Video from 3 June.
