Taylor Sheridan Revives a Key Kevin Costner Moment in Dutton Ranch

Episode 2 of Dutton Ranch features a memorable scene referencing Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, bringing him back into the Yellowstone universe. While Yellowstone concluded with its fifth season in December 2024, the story lives on through its sequels, Dutton Ranch and Marshals, continuing John Dutton’s legacy.

While CBS’s Marshals, a spin-off of Yellowstone focusing on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his work with the U.S. Marshals, hasn’t received the same praise as the original series, the continuation of the Dutton Ranch story now streaming on Paramount+ with Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) feels like a natural extension of Yellowstone. It maintains the same atmosphere and develops characters in a similar way, and includes references to John Dutton.

Rip Reveals John Dutton’s Dating Advice In Dutton Ranch

One ongoing storyline involves the growing relationship between Carter, Beth and Rip’s adopted son, and Oreana, Beulah Jackson’s granddaughter. After a fire forces the family to leave their ranch in Dillon, they purchase the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas, and begin to settle in. However, Carter struggles to adjust to the new surroundings and feels like he doesn’t quite fit in.

Carter wants to be a rancher like his father and is annoyed he still has to go to high school at nineteen. Things get a little better when he meets Oreana at a rodeo and steps in to help her when her boyfriend, Hoyt, is causing trouble. This leads to some advice from Rip in the second episode of Dutton Ranch even though Oreana ultimately stays with Hoyt.

Carter is dealing with feelings for Oreana, and Rip shares some memorable advice he once received. Rip recalled asking his father-in-law for the secret to a lasting relationship. The advice? “On the first day, she’s always right. The second day, she’s still right. And by the third day, you’re definitely wrong.”

Following his death, Yellowstone continues to feature memorable quotes from John Dutton, subtly honoring Kevin Costner’s portrayal and the character’s lasting impact. Throughout the series, John Dutton faced numerous difficulties while striving to hold onto the Yellowstone Ranch, and he frequently shared thoughtful, often reserved, advice with Kayce and Beth – moments that have become some of the show’s most defining characteristics.

As Rip started getting serious with Beth, John’s daughter, in Season 3 of Yellowstone, he likely wanted John’s opinion – this relationship was key to establishing the Dutton Ranch. Beth was a strong-willed character, famously even kidnapping a preacher to get married, but she also had more complex traits that kept her interesting.

Beth And Rip Carry John Dutton’s Yellowstone Legacy

Kevin Costner’s character was central to the original Yellowstone series. It makes sense that the new series would want to acknowledge him. However, the show is also building up other characters, like Beth and Rip, to take on a leading role and continue the story of the ranch.

Like her father, Beth struggles with balancing the need to protect the family ranch with trusting her son. Similarly, Rip has adopted many of Costner’s character traits, now managing the ranch and stepping into a parental role for Carter.

Rip’s advice is similar to what John Dutton believes – the importance of patience. When Carter asks for guidance, Rip tells him to simply listen, no matter what. He explains that whether someone is being kind or unkind, or even if you don’t understand them, the best course of action is to just listen quietly.

Now that John Dutton is gone, Rip Wheeler could become the new source of wisdom and guidance on the Yellowstone ranch. He also has the chance to be an even more supportive father figure to Carter than John was to him. Rip and Beth are navigating parenthood as best they can, even with challenges like Carter accusing his mother of dishonesty.
