The line “I am your father” is arguably the most famous in Star Wars history, and it highlights a recurring theme of family conflict within the franchise. Delivered by the villain Darth Vader to his son, Luke Skywalker, the shocking reveal completely upended Luke’s understanding of his own past – he’d always believed his father was a heroic figure, which wasn’t entirely untrue, but far from the complete picture.
It might be surprising, but a lot of Star Wars characters struggle with complicated relationships with their fathers. Many grew up without dads – Han Solo’s last name actually comes from being alone – and characters like Pedro Pascal’s and Boba Fett also experienced painful losses. But those are just some of the milder cases; the seven characters below have even more difficult stories about their fathers.
Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader, is a remarkably complex character in the Star Wars saga. Prophesized as the Chosen One, he possessed immense power and a corresponding duty. He was a key figure within the Jedi Order, especially during the Clone Wars, but ultimately played a critical role in its downfall, making his story particularly tragic and unusual.
Although being raised without a father wasn’t the sole cause of his issues – he would have grown up without parents as a Jedi anyway – it certainly didn’t make things easier for Anakin. Being told he was a miraculous birth with no father likely inflated his ego. However, this also left him feeling lost and insecure, as he lacked a clear understanding of his origins, which undoubtedly contributed to his struggles.
Luke Skywalker

You know, thinking about difficult father-son relationships in film, Luke Skywalker’s story really hits home. It’s ironic because, just like his dad, he grew up on Tatooine with almost no idea about his family history. But it was way worse for Luke – finding out his father wasn’t just someone he didn’t know, but the guy who’d been basically running the galaxy as a villain his whole life, and who’d just chopped off his hand! It’s a lot for any kid to handle.
Despite growing up without parents, Luke did have positive male influences in his life. Obi-Wan Kenobi showed Luke just how much love his Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen had for him. Although their relationship hadn’t been fully explored before, Owen’s statement that Luke was “his own” proved how much Owen acted as a father figure. Still, learning the truth about Darth Vader was a harsh blow for Luke.
Rotta the Hutt

The latest Star Wars character to be revealed as having complicated family dynamics is Rotta the Hutt, appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Though featured in the new series, Rotta actually first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie, with a small follow-up role in the Clone Wars TV show.
We didn’t learn about Rotta’s complicated relationship with his father until The Mandalorian and Grogu. As the son of the infamous Jabba the Hutt, who had recently passed away, Rotta felt a lot of pressure to forge his own identity. He was determined to be different from his father – he even explicitly said he wanted to be his “own man,” which was a bit strange considering he is a Hutt! It’s clear Rotta carries a lot of baggage related to his dad and his reputation.
Jyn Erso

Jyn Erso, a compelling character introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, quickly reveals a difficult past. She struggles with issues related to her father, initially believing him to be a cruel man who supports the evil Empire and its actions.
Jyn discovers her father wasn’t a collaborator with the Empire, but a secret rebel who intentionally created a flaw in the Death Star to help the Resistance. However, this happy revelation is quickly overshadowed by his death. Sadly, Jyn also doesn’t survive long after learning the truth about her father, leaving her with a tragic loss.
Leia Organa

Like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa is the biological daughter of Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader. While discovering this was incredibly difficult for Luke, Leia experienced even more trauma. In A New Hope, she was personally tortured by Darth Vader, and even worse, she was forced to witness the destruction of her home planet and the deaths of everyone she cared about, all at the hands of Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, and the Death Star.
Leia couldn’t bring herself to forgive Anakin/Vader like Luke did, and she remained hurt and resentful of him until her death. Fortunately, she had a loving upbringing with her adoptive father, Bail Organa, which provided some comfort.
Rey

From the beginning of her story, Rey’s longing for her parents is a central part of her character. We learn in The Force Awakens that she was left on Jakku as a child and has been waiting for her parents to come back ever since. This preoccupation is highlighted in The Last Jedi when Kylo Ren points out her continued need for their approval and her focus on finding them.
Okay, let’s talk about Rey’s parentage. It wasn’t the dramatic reveal some expected – thankfully, Kylo Ren’s initial story about them selling her was a lie. But honestly? The truth wasn’t much brighter. Turns out, her parents weren’t powerful figures, but ordinary people who died trying to keep her safe. It’s a heartbreaking twist, and while it avoids one extreme, it still leaves Rey with a pretty somber backstory. It definitely didn’t give me the feel-good moment I was hoping for.
Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren arguably has the biggest family issues in all of Star Wars. Even as a child, before the events of The Force Awakens, he felt let down by his parents. Later, in The Force Awakens, he takes things a step further and kills his father, Han Solo, as a way to demonstrate his dedication to the dark side.
Kylo Ren struggled with his allegiance to the dark side, deeply regretting his actions towards his father. This guilt was so powerful that he was haunted by his father’s memory in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This makes him arguably the most affected by his family history in a saga known for its characters with complicated relationships with their parents.
