Asus has just announced the ROG Ally X20, the newest addition to its handheld gaming family. This upgraded version of the ROG Ally X boasts a vibrant OLED screen and more precise joysticks. To celebrate 20 years of its ROG brand, Asus will bundle the Ally X20 with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses.
The Xbox Ally X20 is powered by the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip as the original Xbox Ally X. It also includes Xbox mode, which makes it easier to use game controllers with Windows 11. The two devices are very similar in terms of specs, both offering 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1 TB of fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage.
The device’s case is made of see-through black plastic, letting you glimpse the internal components. This design choice makes it stand out from other handheld gaming PCs.
The biggest feature of the XBOX Ally X20 is its stunning OLED screen, which is a bit bigger than the one on the original XBOX Ally – 7.4 inches compared to 7 inches. It boasts a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate, supports FreeSync Premium Pro for tear-free gaming, and can get incredibly bright, reaching up to 1,400 nits. This makes for a fantastic experience when watching HDR videos or playing visually rich games.
OLED screens get hotter than LCD screens, so the Xbox Ally X20 has a new cooling system. This system directs airflow directly to the processor to keep the screen itself cooler. While this improved cooling might slightly improve overall performance, don’t expect a major jump in frame rates or graphics quality compared to the original ROG Ally.
The new OLED screen on the XBOX Ally X20 now puts it in the same category as the OLED Steam Deck. Plus, its TMR joysticks are similar to those found on the recently released Steam Controller.
The ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR gaming glasses create a massive 171-inch virtual display that appears as if it’s 4 meters away. This display is incredibly smooth with a 240Hz refresh rate, a super-fast 0.01ms response time, and fills almost all of your central vision (covering 95% of your focused field of view). Built-in head tracking ensures the screen stays in view even when you move your head, and an Anchor Mode lets you fix the screen in a specific position.
The ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 easily connects to devices in the XBOX Ally family using a USB-C cable, and setup is automatic with included software.
Asus hasn’t yet revealed any details regarding the bundle’s release date or price.
