The Dark Tower Arrives on Paramount+ Ahead of New Reboot

A Stephen King story often considered a weak adaptation is finding a new audience on Paramount+. The move comes just before a planned reboot, giving fans a chance to revisit the original before the fresh take arrives.

The fantasy sci-fi movie The Dark Tower, released in 2017, was added to SHOWTIME on June 1st. You can still watch it on Hulu and The Roku Channel. This news comes before the planned television remake by Mike Flanagan.

The Dark Tower Was a Disappointing Stephen King Adaptation

The Dark Tower movie, released in 2017, is based on Stephen King’s popular book series. Idris Elba plays Roland Deschain, the last of a legendary warrior known as Gunslingers, in a world that blends fantasy and science fiction. He’s locked in a never-ending fight with the enigmatic Man in Black (played by Matthew McConaughey) and must protect the Dark Tower, which is essential for keeping the universe from collapsing.

Despite having a potentially grand story, The Dark Tower movie disappointed many readers of Stephen King’s books and moviegoers in general. Critics didn’t like it, giving it a low 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 44% audience score. Most agreed the film failed to capture what made the books so beloved, resulting in a confusing and unsuccessful adaptation.

Okay, so this movie cost only $66 million to make, which is pretty low for a blockbuster, but shockingly, it still didn’t make enough at the box office to even cover its costs! It was a real disappointment, and Sony just pulled the plug on any plans for sequels. I heard whispers about maybe continuing the story on TV, but honestly, that version of the franchise is totally dead now. It’s a shame, I was kinda hoping for more!

Everything We Know About The Dark Tower’s New Reboot

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is getting a new TV series. Mike Flanagan, known for his successful adaptations of King’s work – like Doctor Sleep (2019) and The Life of Chuck (2024) – will be leading the project.

The upcoming series will be available on Prime Video and has the potential to become a major franchise if it performs well. Creator Mike Flanagan intends to create a more accurate adaptation of Stephen King’s books, potentially spanning five seasons and culminating in a two-part movie event. However, whether this ambitious plan comes to fruition depends on how audiences react to the show when it first airs.

The Dark Tower is now streaming on Paramount+.
