300 director Zack Snyder to remake classic 1980s dystopian action movie

Studio Canal announced in April that they were planning a remake of John Carpenter’s classic 1981 movie, Escape from New York. Now, it’s been confirmed that Zack Snyder will be directing the new film.

Zack Snyder, the director of ‘300’ and known for his work on films like ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Rebel Moon’, as well as his previous DC projects, will be writing and directing a new version of a popular action movie. He will also be producing the film.

Hugh Spearing, the company’s executive vice president of global marketing and distribution, first announced plans to revive the franchise at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. However, at the time, they didn’t share any information about who would be working on the project.

As a big fan of Zack Snyder, I was excited to see the second part of his sci-fi saga, Rebel Moon, drop on Netflix recently. And it sounds like he’s not slowing down – he’s currently finishing up a drama called The Last Photograph, which we should hopefully get to see sometime in 2026. I’m really looking forward to it!

The movie is about a former DEA agent who travels to the mountains of South America to find his niece and nephew after their parents are killed.

Over the years, there have been several tries to remake ‘Escape from New York’ for today’s audiences, but none of those projects ever actually got made.

Over the years, several people – including producers like Joel Silver, director Robert Rodriguez, and the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – have tried to get this project off the ground, but none of their attempts made it beyond the initial planning phases.

The original movie featured Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a tough war veteran and criminal in a future America. He’s given just 24 hours to save the President after Air Force One crashes in Manhattan, which has been turned into a huge, inescapable prison.

When it was first released, the film received excellent reviews, particularly praised for its bleak and gritty depiction of a futuristic world. It’s since gained a dedicated cult following. Kurt Russell returned to play the same character in the 1996 sequel, Escape from LA, but that film wasn’t as popular with critics or audiences.

With Snyder confirmed as director, the big question now is who will play Plissken in the remake. It’s going to be fascinating to see which actor gets the part.

We can likely eliminate Wyatt Russell as a possibility, as he’s stated before that taking a role his father was known for would be damaging to his career.
