KPop Demon Hunters Suffers Defeat as Fans Await Sequel

The animated film KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a major hit for Netflix, becoming its most popular original animated film since its release last June. Although a sequel is planned, fans will have to wait until 2029 to see it. Despite the wait, the characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey continue to generate buzz. Recently, however, the film’s award-winning song, “Golden,” didn’t perform as well as expected against a key competitor.

“Golden” is one of the first songs featured in KPop Demon Hunters and has become its signature tune. The song quickly rose to number two on the “Adult Contemporary” chart, staying there for thirty-four weeks. Although Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” held the top spot, this was a significant achievement for the film’s soundtrack. Notably, “Golden” became the most successful K-Pop song ever to chart in the “Adult Contemporary” category. As fans await details about the sequel’s music, it faces the challenge of living up to the success of its predecessor’s soundtrack.

KPop’s Competition

The movie KPop Demon Hunters quickly became Netflix’s most popular title, but it’s facing strong competition. Swapped has emerged as a major contender, achieving the highest single-week viewership for a Sony Pictures Animation film. Last month, Swapped reached 38.7 million views in just one week, surpassing the previous record held by KPop Demon Hunters. Although the animated film, featuring Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, may not ultimately exceed Huntrix’s overall numbers, it’s rapidly gaining popularity.

Following the success of KPop Demon Hunters, director Maggie Kang has shared some insights into the upcoming sequel. She emphasized the team’s desire to maintain high quality and originality, knowing that K-pop fans have high expectations and will quickly notice any shortcomings. While the plot details are still under wraps, producers have suggested that the sequel will delve deeper into the stories of supporting characters like Zoey, Mira, and Derpy, who played significant roles in the first film but received less focus than the main character, Rumi.
